In that Kotaku article on the last page, it says that the game cards are not writable. Why? I don't get their obsession with making it nearly impossible to take your save with your game, without bringing the whole system, but at least it's more portable than past systems.

There's nothing stopping Nintendo from using some sort of cloud based service for saves. Steam does it, and both PS4 and Xbox One offers this kind of service. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect Nintendo to make this happen, but make no mistake, there is nothing stopping them from doing so - other than Nintendo being Nintendo I mean...

If I found my students playing the Switch in my class, I'd have to ask them to leave.  If I knew someone was playing it while on the toilet, I wouldn't touch their Switch.  Sometimes too much portability isn't a wonderful thing. :P

But again, you can do all of that with a lot of other things.

I have no intention of playing games on the can, partially for sanitary reasons, mostly because I've never seen the appeal. I just want to take care of business and get out of there ASAP.

Cloud features were already confirmed, actually.

- Up to eight Nintendo Accounts can be supported by the system. "The user will access the Nintendo eShop that corresponds to the country identified in their Nintendo Account."

Multiple files off one virtual console (or other) Pokemon game?

Well it sure didn't take long for the awful knockoffs to appear.

That's so awful it's glorious. The terrible models and music and voice clips are funny on their own, but ripping off 1-2-Switch and "It's High Noon" in one game is what really sells it.

(Realizes my first post in the Switch thread is in response to a ripoff game. What am I doing)

I really wanted to find out it was a hoax, but wow, you've got to be kidding me. Not even Sony would stoop that low :blah:

So here's a couple things. This Twitter thread has a bit of news, the tweet and first two replies, but I'll quote them here.

1) Just in: Nintendo president Kimishima tells the Nikkei Switch's online service will be priced at 2-3,000 yen ($17.50 - $26.50) *YEARLY*.

2) Kimishima says the yearly fees make it easier for Nintendo to support online features such as multiplayer or downloads of classic games.

3) He says Nintendo currently "studies" VR + will add VR to Switch once they figure out how users can play for hours without problems. /end

I'm getting worried about this VR craze. I don't really care for it to become standard, and something the big companies try to focus on instead of traditional TV/screen gaming. However, at least the online service seems like it will be cheaper than competitors, which is all I could have hoped for at this point. We'll just have to wait and see what the officially announced price in the West will be.

Also Nintendo released a new commercial (and a shorter version) that will apparently be shown at the Super Bowl. I have to say... much more well-done than anything in the Wii U era. Minus that awful song, but they're certainly showing off the console's versatility and even have a bit of that Wii marketing in there. Hopefully this pays off for them. Also, Super Bowl? They're going all out with the advertising this time.

That is a pretty good commercial. Nothing will top the 64's ad campaign for me, but I'm just being dumb and nostalgic. :P

You probably don't have to be too worried about VR for several reasons. For one, like I mentioned in chat the other day, VR is not going to replace traditional displays - I doubt that it will do that even in the far future.

There is also a few other things to keep in mind here. If Nintendo adds VR support, that is most likely going to look more like the Gear VR than the HTC Vive, both in terms of functionality and price. For those who are unaware, the Gear VR is a head mounted device that uses your phone as a screen. I suspect Nintendo is looking to create a similar product where you put the Switch itself into a Gear VR-like device. If this is their plan, then it probably is not going to be very costly either.

I've suspected they would do something like this ever since the rumors talked about a handheld device, however I think the Switch's hardware might be another hinderance for Nintendo in regards to VR, at least in the context of actual games. If what we have heard about its hardware is true then I highly doubt that any VR content running on the Switch would be any more advanced than what you can currently see on the Gear VR. And those are limited to fairly simple mobile-type games, and a longer list of 3D 360 content like videos. In other words, I doubt VR will be a big selling point for the Switch in its current form. Time will tell, of course.

All that said, VR is going to be huge - it is already a truly revolutionary way to experience games - it would be absolute madness on Nintendo's part not to at least consider it. If I had to guess, I think we might not see "true" VR experiences on the Switch until perhaps the second iteration of the console.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that people are complaining about the $300 price of the Switch when that's how much a 3DS XL goes for? One of these things is a little more powerful...

(edit: looked at the price just now and found it for $200, but last time I looked it was $300)

I don't think 3DS XL was ever higher than $200 to be honest, assuming you're talking about the New model.
