The 8 direciton movement limitation seems to work well because I believe the angles you move at seamlessly changes depending on where you are in a level (And camera angle) to ensure decent control.

It's not the 8-direction movement you should be worried about. If there were a few complaints about the game, I'd say it would be the levels that require the gamepad where if you use other controllers like the CCP, Wiimote or the Pro Controller.the game will lock you out of those levels. And also the minor camera issues found in very few levels. 

 

I prefer playing this game using the Pro Controller over the Gamepad. More comfortable for this game IMO and I find long jumping to be a lot easier using this controller.

Yeah, gamepad is TOO HUGE AND UNWIELDLY for platformers. And my friend thinks the game has 16 direction control, whchi might be true. I do knnow it snaps you to specific angles though.
