I am using CSet 3 for the grass, however the pallete I'm using, (Thanks to Migo), has the lightest green extremely light, because this pallete was designed to be used with a transparent canopy overhead. I left out the transparent overlay for the purpose of SotW so you guys can easily see the rest of the screen.

IPB Image

I see... Hmmm...

So you're using a very greyish green for that particular color in the palette because it is designed to produce a specific green midtone when combined with a translucent canopy layer?

If that's the case, given some experimentation, it should be possible to make that color more greenish without changing the resulting color when the canopy is used. Personally, I would recommend reducing the amount of red in that particular color's RGB value and increasing the amount of green (unless, of course, it is already maxed out). A slight change should be enough to make it look bright green rather than light grey.

Unless, of course, you are using that color for other tiles which are not shown, and changing it would cause a conflict. If that is the case, I'd recommend using 8-bit mode (or something) on the conflicting tiles.

Honestly, for me it was down to the two simplest screens. Naldrag's and Taco Chopper's.

BCA's feels a bit too blocky. If it all flowed a bit more I would have liked it, but it just felt too chunky.

Koh's isn't a bad screen at all, but is somewhat unappealing out of context.

Sephiroth's was put together well, but I don't like the colors much. Contrasts against itself quite a bit.

Naldrag's threw me off with the random npc placement. Doesn't really flow. Also, the two mountain ridges on the bottom of the screen feel like they are at a different but unappealing angle from the top ones.

Taco Choppers, regardless of what others have said got my vote. It's the most appealing to the eye of all the choices. I guess what I look for mostly is cleanliness and light consistency, and this screen, despite it's simplicity comes off really nice to me.

edit: Accidentally voted on Naldrag's instead of Tacos. Probably wont affect outcome very much though.

It's a shame you guys are thinking like this. My screen is actually a tribute to minimalism, as well as the avant-garde composer John Cage and his piece "4' 33"" (look it up if you have the time, or just sit staring at your monitor for 4 and a half minutes for your very own cover version). It is more of an art form than a joke shot, and hopefully there are some people out there who can understand where I'm coming from.

(I'm not being an idiot by the way, I'm serious.)

well if it is supposed to be art, then why is it so bland?
It basically has nothing at all on it. If you like the piece so much, then why dd you do such a poor job
reinventing it in Zquest?

Also,it's not even music. I don't really get the point. I...just wasted...4 minutes 33 seconds of my life.

You obviously don't understand, 4'33" shows that art is in anything, no matter how much it may seem that there isn't. 4'33" isn't just silence, the song is the noise in the room around you. All music is is a combination of sound and silence, it doesn't have to be any more or any less.

This isn't any more artsy than this.

I suggest you read up and stop being so ignorant!

I for one, think Taco's screen is a masterpiece and would have gladly voted for it.

No, I know what it's supposed to mean. I read about it before but still, having that in a concert would just be extremely boring.
It's still to me just a waste of time and I love art and music.

Okay Cremeens, but this is a topic about the screens themselves, not discussing whether or not anything can be art. Let's not get off-topic please.

Oh, sorry...The screen does kinda resemble the piece like he's just listening to the blank sounds
of the wilderness or something. But, still, I think it could be much better done.

Koh, you're screen has a slight tile use error in the lower left. Double up the side mountain tile so the perspective is correct.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It doesn't look too bad though.

And Sephiroth, how did you get that grass to look so beautiful? I don't know what it is about it, but that grass looks incredible. I love that grey/silver tint you've added to it.

Well, I might as well tell you guys this now since it seems like you couldn't figure it out by yourselves.

My shot was a "joke" shot. I say "joke" because it has a deeper meaning than just "oh hey im gonna submit a bad shot to sotw LOL icon_smile.gif icon_smile.gif". I seriously just opened up ZC, opened the tileset, and started placing random combos all over the place until it looked like some sort of horribly regurgitated screen. I took the shot in ZQuest and saved it as a .jpg to make it look horrible on purpose, and then after that I went through the trouble of actually ripping the jpg into the tile editor just to make it seem worse. How many of you even noticed this? One?

I seriously made the worst screen I could possibly think of that wasn't just completely empty and whatnot and you people loved it. Look at the ratings I got on it, 6, 7, 6, 9, 7, 6. Not great, but still that's fairly average to good. Is that all somebody has to do in ZQ to impress the community nowadays? Throw down a bunch of random tiles and not even bother taking a decent quality screenshot? I'm sure great questmakers like Exate are rolling in their graves at this fact.

Why even bother putting effort into ZC anymore if you're all just going to like the s*** we produce without using any? Really, the past few SotW's have had shots that I don't consider to be any higher quality than my own this week. And yeah, the most qualified shots tend to win every week, but everybody still just eats up the other screens without any constructive criticism past the point of something along the lines of "move that rock icon_thumbsup.gif" or whatever.

And even Taco_Chopper and Naldrag got some fairly good ratings for the shots they were (they were in on this, more people were supposed to be as well but whatever). And just to clarify, Taco's screen wasn't meant to be a tribute to minimalism or anything, though 4'33" is a great composition and I agree with everything I said defending the point.

Though to whoever voted for Sephiroth's shot, congratulations, you picked out the good one that deserved to win at the very least. I'm proud of you, at least a bit.

I think the general reason is this:

1. You used Minish Cap tiles, which individually look very good. Someone with real talent drew them.
2. You did an overworld forest screenshot, and people often intentionally try to place trees and shrubs rather randomly in order to make it feel more organic.
3. Since Minish Cap tiles are high-detail, the switch to JPG didn't mess up the visibility of the map area of the screenshot very much. For the most part, it only distorted the ZQuest menus, which no one really cares about.

So basically, you're saying you're a troll and we should all feel ashamed for taking you seriously. Hmmm. Let's give that another look.

Did you get people to say some nice things to you? Yeah, I guess you did. But there is no real prize for SOTW; the only thing people get out of it is a little satisfaction. Knowing that people are competing for satisfaction, the voters who critique submissions tend to focus on giving encouragement to the entrants.

Sometimes, people will even vote for an entry not because it is the best, but because they want to encourage the person. It is very disappointing to get 0 votes, and sometimes people want to give the underdog a little satisfaction so they'll do better next time. Such voting patterns rarely change the winner, so there's little harm in doing it.

Obviously, this isn't true across the board. Only 10% of people voted for your screenshot. So what you've proven is that about 10% of the people here either pay too much attention to the tileset OR were more interested in being nice to the underdog than voting for the best.

In short, if this is how you're going to act, and if this is a demonstration of how little you think of us... just go away, Lithium. It's a friggin' screenshot contest for a free fan program. Who wins is not all that important. The fact that YOU are invested enough in its outcome to make a "trap" submission speaks pretty badly of you, too. You aren't doing anything to improve this contest, to help anybody in any way, or even to make yourself look better. Hell, your attempt at trolling isn't really enough to truly offend anybody. You're just being a douche and annoying people. Woooow. That sure makes you unique. icon_clap.gif

Exate and various other master questmakers died? When did this happen?

That said, I don't think there's a post I've read that I've agreed with more than Radien's here. I don't know what you think you're trying to prove, Lithium, but all that's actually being proven is that you're no better than the average internet spammer/troll.

As I have said many times before, I'd prefer it if people didn't comment on the poll results. The people who can see it already know, and the ones who haven't voted keep their vote pure.

So you proved that 80% of the people who voted in this poll were at least able to choose a legitimate shot, some fraction of the 20% are nice enough to give pity votes, and that people tend to not be as harsh as they can be when rating screenshots? Was this supposed to be bad?

EDIT: I'm not taking sides. I'm not commenting on the PureZC community's standards. But this little experiment didn't prove anything except that maybe people are too nice.

Well to be honest, I felt I did the best I could with what I was going for in the LTTP Tileset. It may not be the most detailed set out there, but I felt what I was going for could have been pulled off decently in there. If I was able to get into the player, what you would have seen was Link in the shallow water, and about 5 Red Octoroks, 3 of which are Fast. But meh, I guess everyone has opinions icon_shrug.gif. And there's also that saying I heard from Prospeckt; "Opinions are like asses; Everyone has one, but no one thinks theirs stinks."
