That's what I'm hoping for too, ultimately.

Uh, Link has never had sideburns. Sideburns = facial hair.

That's what Triforce Heroes refers to the hair dangles on the side of his head. I was just quoting that.

You know, what if it's a re-envisioning of the first Zelda, with its supposed open-world and open-endedness? This game might carry on the spirt of the original game's freedom and non-linearity, only this time in 3d. It wouldn't surprise me if this is the case either, as this year is Zelda's 30th anniversary!

Spoiler

I actually choose to believe that this was unintentional in the sense that they've so well captured the spirit of Z1 without needing to consciously point to it.

Anyway, yeah, it's definitely gonna be an open world game, from what's been discussed and talked about.  I think they want to refresh the series by revisiting its roots.

Considering they officialized the timeline I don't see a reboot happening (plus you'd cut off the old games they're trying to sell on VC). I'd love a remake, but Nintendo hasn't really done that yet unless you count BS-LoZ, sure we've have a few graphical enhancements on the 3Ds and WiiU.

I'm just saying Nintendo hasn't been willing to pull a huge surprise on me in a long, long time. I mean, Skyward Sword was the first 3D game where the world began to feel really open, but other games were even more open years before that. And I've always hoped Nintendo would give us a longer game than the typical 8 dungeons, and they haven't done that either (someone said ALBW has a lot, but I haven't looked into that game yet so I don't know).

I would love it if Zelda U is amazing and game-changing somehow, but I expected that with Twilight Princess and didn't get it. Ever since I expect a medium length 8 dungeon quality romp, and that's what I've been getting.

EDIT: Yeah I'm griping, but I'd love to be wrong.

Well, Scoot said "refresh," not "reboot," I imagine she more meant rejuvenate the series' style and direction rather than reboot the franchise. Missed Anthus's mention, whoops. But his was in quotes so this still counts!!! :heh:

That said, even if it was a reboot, that doesn't mean the older games wouldn't still matter to the fans and to Nintendo. They're great games we love to play and enjoy, and Nintendo profits off that; plus, they contain the blueprints for what makes Zelda games really fun. It's like how the old Star Wars Expanded Universe is still being circulated as "Legends," and some of the stories within are blueprints that can be used to tell brand new stories in Disney's canon.

Theoretically, I could almost see a Zelda reboot working, actually... One with a more cohesive mythology, even. That'd be something. But I doubt it would come to that.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean that Zelda U would be a Z1 remake, just that it would be a re-envisioning of sorts, carrying on the first game's spirit.

I think that was their focus. Though I think due to mentioning several titles, they might be taking their best titles and referencing them to make the "ultimate Zelda"? It makes sense.

They also mentioned Twilight Princess is the origin point and that it will be related somehow, so definitely not a Zelda 1 remake if anyone still has that in their minds. :P

So in a way, it'd be like its own game but similar. Kind of like A Link Between Worlds, sort of.

Well, it's all speculation at this point.  Nothing to do but wait until it comes out...which is this year, right?  If they really have revisited the exploratory roots that spawned the first game in the first place, we'll know this year.  My main concern is that the overworld may end up being too big, and ultimately empty, like OoT's overworld.

I enjoy exploring Zelda worlds, at least once or twice, even if they are "empty". Other than Hyrule Field, I don't think oot's is that empty.

BAD FUCKING NEWS

Zelda U pushed to 2017. The tweet above (as well as one from NoA's Twitter) confirm March 2017 NX release. The tweet I linked implies NX version and Wii U version to launch at the same time. So that means we have almost an entire fucking year to wait now. Farore damn it I'm getting peeved at this, with the only bright spot being that at least both versions will launch simultaneously.

EDIT: NoA's Twitter confirms it now.

This is the first release date I've heard of. Didn't know it was getting pushed back. A whole year? Feels like summer break's a few weeks away, and then the NX is here right when the New Year's getting started. Seems like it's right around the corner to me. I dunno, seems like positive news to me. I'm excited.

It was originally aimed for 2015, before Aonuma made a video stating they could no longer promise a 2015 release date because they wanted to make it the best experience. Come E3 2015, they showed a very brief clip with a "2016" release date. And now this.
