Which is one of the reasons I was disheartened a bit, when in HeartGold, Leaf didn't make an appearance anywhere.  I knew Red would still be on Mt. Silver like always, but I thought Leaf was going to be added somewhere too.

With Zelda, there is a bit more room to have the second character actually have a purpose, considering the lore.

A female Link in some form is fine by me. I do like the idea of keeping her a separate character from male Link, that way you can do more with her story-wise, but I won't mind if it's just a flick of a button, and now you're a girl. As long as they don't make her generic, kawaii animu garbage like Linkle. (Also, don't have her default name be Linkle. That name is awful.)

As for voice acting, I guess I wouldn't mind, as long as the voice acting is decent. Also, for random NPCs, don't have Link locked into conversation with them, especially if the voice actor is slow. Allow Link to just bail from the conversation if it's not important, like most games today.

For a game like Zelda U, from what it sounds like, it seems like it would be better to have the Red/Leaf scenario, as opposed to the Ethan/Lyra situation (as long as we're using Pokemon as our reference).  While the latter might work well in titles that are more story-driven, like Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess, Zelda U has been shaping up to be a lot like the original Zelda, with a world to explore that doesn't restrict where you can go because of the story- and while it will definitely have an overarching story, it won't be like other modern titles where it drives the player from place to place, but rather takes its form in the setting.  It seems similar to how Metroid is usually about Samus in solitude.  Everything we've seen points to Link being all alone with their horse in a massive world to explore.

Anyway, the funny thing about Link's design in Zelda U is that it's very androgynous, more so than usual, so they wouldn't even have to change really anything to make a female Link.  Using a dramatically different design like Linkle's would be fine too (I like it), but I'm not too picky I guess.

I'd honestly prefer a female Link to have very little differences from her male counterpart. She should have the same iconic features - long ears, epic sideburns, parted hair, etc. - and the only differences being that she has more obvious feminine features, like a slightly slimmer, shapely figure. They don't need to put her in a cute outfit to make it obvious that she's a girl. She should be treated with the same respect as male Link.

Eh, I'd rather get away from the stigma that cute and cool are mutually exclusive. I.E. Linkle's design comes off as both of those to me. Princess Zelda also has had some really great outfits and still kicks ass in them. Like I get what you're saying- just because she's a girl doesn't mean she should have to be cute, but I think we should also get away from thinking that a feminine design would be inferior. I know plenty of people that when they play RPGs/MMOs, they like to go for cuter outfits because they like having the option.

To be honest I'd love customizable outfits in general, though I'd be okay with just the new outfit.

I wouldn't mind customization in the outfits. I definitely wouldn't want to be going on a huge adventure, fighting strong baddies in a girl scout uniform, though. If the option is there, I guess it wouldn't do any harm, but if there's no customization, I'd rather her just wear the same thing as male Link with maybe a few alterations, mostly because I just love Link's design in Zelda U as it is, but also because I'm not privy to the idea of my main lead wearing some stupid cutesy outfit while embarking on an epic quest.

Look, all I'm saying is, if I can't save the day while wearing a top hat, a ballet leotard, and spiked cleats, I'm out.

I agree that separate characters would be better than just changing an already established characters gender.

Well, there's nothing that says that Link has to be male, though. In each game, he's basically a reincarnation of Link.  Zelda has pulled a lot from Buddhism (especially in Skyward Sword, but it's hardly the only game where they've done that), and reincarnation in Buddhism doesn't specify that people have to be reincarnated as the same gender, I don't believe.  I did some quick checking and I know that Hinduism doesn't specify staying as the same gender, but I'm not 100% sure about Buddhism.  So, I don't think it's necessarily a requirement that each version of Link has to be male.  Either way, there's no established gender for every reincarnation of Link right now, only that the current iterations of Link have happened to be male.

Off-topic, but I think seeing people reincarnate into the past would interesting stories.

Epic side burns? On a girl? Hm.. it could work lol. I think as it stands, Link does look a bit girly, especially in TP, and adult OoT. His belt defines his waist quite well, and the dude is wearing a freakin' skirt with those toned ass legs.  :blah:

I actually think it would be neat to have the choice to play as a female incarnation of Link. I also disagree with others to an extent, cause I don't think there should be much narrative change based on gender. I dunno though, I guess it could be done well, and they could even do a "second quest" type thing, but that's pushing it. Either way, if I do have a reason to replay the game as another character, I would. If there is an option, I'm totally playing as female Link. I dunno why, but in most games, I always choose to play as a girl, if I can lol.

I feel like they are going to do something like what they planned for OoT with having different arrows, or as Miyamoto called it at one point in OoT's development, "magic missiles". OoT's medallions were originally going to be used to power up the arrows with their respective element. Forest was wind, (possibly regular arrows), and Water was Ice at that point. [source] (<- This is actually really interesting). I'm thinking this cause in the trailer they show off the bow and arrow, and we still haven't seen any sword combat yet.

One mechanic change I think would be neat is being able to run, and slash (a la TP) but also, move, and attack, in general without stopping once you connect with an enemy, if that makes sense.

Uh, Link has never had sideburns. Sideburns = facial hair.

Good point, that is technically true. Goron Link is the only Link with legit sideburns lol.

One thing I think would be interesting is if they restructured the way dungeons are considered dungeons. I guess what I mean is, we've come to expect certain things from dungeons. We expect a certain amount of dungeons, and a certain flow. Since, pretty much, AlttP it's been "one set of dungeons -> master sword GET -> second set of dungeons -> epic shit happens -> final dungeon". We usually expect 8-9 dungeons. What if the game had 20 or so smaller dungeons that were more integrated into the world around them? It's hard to articulate exactly what I mean, but let's look at some numbers.

Zelda 1 = 9, but 18 dungeons including the second quest.

Zelda 2 = 7 dungeons.

AlttP = 12 (13 if you count the return to Hyrule Castle).

LA, and OoX = 9.

OoT = 9.

MM = 4.

TWW = 7 (8 if you count revisiting Forsaken Fortress).

TMC = 6.

TP = 9.

DS games = I actually don't know.. :D

SS = 9.

ALBW = 11.

So, my point is, the numbers are all over the place. Some games have mini dungeons too, and frankly, I wish more of them did. OoT, MM, and TWW have the most mini-dungeons. TP has one, MM has 4, AlttP has none, but a lot of caves. I guess my point is, it would be neat to have areas just kind of flow naturally together. I am tired of the 3 dungeons + 5 more + end system. And in a game that looks as massive as this, I'd be surprised if they didn't change it up. I'm very hopeful for this. I'm also putting my money on them just calling it "The Legend of Zelda" and 'rebooting' the series cause the game is allegedly coming out in the next seven months, and there is not subtitle yet.

I honestly don't care if the game is getting voice acting, but if it is utter shit, i want the option of turning it off and have the dialogue boxes.

What i would really want would be dialogue options with characters react differently depending on your choice or even changing the outcome of certain sidequests (if the game will have some). Skyward Sword kind of did this but i think it had no impact on anything.

You know, what if it's a re-envisioning of the first Zelda, with its supposed open-world and open-endedness? This game might carry on the spirt of the original game's freedom and non-linearity, only this time in 3d. It wouldn't surprise me if this is the case either, as this year is Zelda's 30th anniversary!
