So is this an actual project you're working on? Did you get permission from DFW?

Yeah, I got permission from DFW a while back. She told me I can and she said that I would have to do it from scratch. Meaning I have to play through the quest, take snapshots, and rebuild it.

Quick fact, I don't like doing anything without someone's permission. icon_wink.gif

EDIT: Here's a half-complete map of the first island.

You used the wrong cave opening on the right side. It should be sand, not grass underneath. icon_smile.gif

Thanks for catching that. I forgot to change that when I detailed the screen. icon_doh.gif

Yes he could swim in Isle of Winds. I am trying to find alternatives to what DarkFlameWolf did. I'll hopefully be able to use smart placement when I get the surrounding screens done, but for now, I have to keep it like this until then. When I get to that point, I would love to use less. icon_smile.gif

Maybe an alternative to using a bunch of junk in the water is to just use an even darker color of water where you can't swim in it, it would just be a solid combo instead. That would make it look clean. You could argue that the water is too deep to safely swim in or something.

Otherwise, the screens are looking nice. I'd say the tree you're using is used a bit excessively. I don't exactly know how I'd describe what I would do, but if I find time later today, I'll post a screenshot of what I would do to vary the vegetation.

That's a fantastic idea! I'll try that out! icon_biggrin.gif

I know about the trees, I'll get to that when the island is done.

Wait, so you don't have the password and can not open the file? That's the dumbest thing ever. ._. I mean, it's still great that you are remaking this (I guess; never played it) but if the original author gives permission to remake her game but refuses to give you the password that's simply dumb. Like, seriously, what's the point?

Well, I don't really mind. If I have to do it the hard way, I'll do it. I have done this before. icon_smile.gif I asked her if I could get the password to open it and make the process easier, but yeah, I'm not complaining. At least I get the chance to work on the first quest I ever completed. icon_smile.gif

I'm usually pretty laid back about a lot of things. So stuff like this doesn't bother me, really. icon_smile.gif

Because she shouldn't have to release her "source code" for a fan project?

Anyway, Sepulcher, not to be a downer but I don't quite get why you're doing this. You said it was mainly a graphical update, but other than using a standard tileset I don't think there was anything wrong with the graphics. If the problem was stale graphics, then why are you just replacing them with slightly different, uglier, just-as-stale graphics? At least Pure had harmony - the Frankenset you're using doesn't. High-detail grass and sand next to flat blue water? I really don't think you should progress using the current tileset - you need to find something new. Even if you suck at art, there's bound to be a ton of top-down SNES/GBA games that haven't yet made an appearance on PureZC. I suggest you put the time and effort into finding something new.

If you're doing it as a learning experience and for your own enjoyment, go for it and have fun, but if you're expecting it to be well received in the community I honestly don't see why anyone would play this over the original. icon_shrug.gif

I understand what you mean, but at the same time I have reasons of my own. icon_smile.gif I am also adding things to adapt it to 2.5. I have certain things, such as small amounts of scripting, that are a part of making this into a 2.5 quest while still staying within the bounds of the original. I do this as a learning experience as well as something to give to the community. No, I don't expect EVERYONE to be happy with it, but I know a select few who would love a chance to play this with the updated gameplay, new sidequests, and the like. That alone, is enough to give me the motivation to do this. I don't take any of your words as an attack on the work I am doing on this, by the way. icon_wink.gif I am glad you expressed your opinion on the subject. icon_smile.gif

If it matters at all, I had been trying to play one of her old quests back on RC3, and hit a glitch where I couldn't swim through a doorway. I sent her a PM about it, and she said something about how she couldn't give me the password because she couldn't remember it anymore. It's entirely possible it's not just some sort of attitude preventing her from sending you the password for the original quest.

Anyways, I don't mind the tileset you're using, except that the points where the water meets the land doesn't quite match up correctly. Do you have any alternatives you could use? I'm rather fond of the redrawn GBC ocean tiles that were redrawn to fit into Pure/DoR. Also, while this is more a matter of opinion over misplaced or mismatching tiles, I don't really like the cliff graphics you use for the upper areas. Would it work to use the detailed stone ledges like what you're using near the water for all of the cliffs, to make them match a bit more?

It seems like a lot of complaints about the tileset, but they're pretty minor. It looks really nice the way you're doing it now. If I could request something, though, could you possibly show the original screen as a comparison when you post a new picture? I don't think I've played this one, so it would be nice to compare the originals to what you're doing.

-----
EDIT: Got ninja'd by you when I was writing this, and wanted to mention something you brought up in your post...

I kind of like the idea of updating older quests to work better with the new features in 2.5. I'm kind of curious, if Peteo and DFW were to either re-make or update Lost Isle to utilize the new features, what changes they'd make. Personally, I'd love having actual arrows as well as map markers to show where to go next placed on the minimap.

(Kind of going off-topic now, considering this is a screenshot thread. Next post I make, I'll put up a screenshot of my new quest. I'd put one up now, but I don't actually have any taken yet.)

Yeah, I never thought it was any attitude. She's a nice person and all. I've never had any problems. She was nice enough to let me do this. icon_smile.gif

I will look into the suggestions you mentioned and see if they work.

As for screenshots, I am planing to do that when I get the last two screens of the island done. I am almost done with detailing. icon_wink.gif

I remember I was testing some newly ripped DOR tiles awhile back. I think the lilipad is 18-bit and from a custom tileset by Cukeman based off of DOR and MC. If I remember right.

Sepulcher, this is a kinda-tWW-like quest from what I gather, yes? You could try where using Prince MSC's AI mountains and tMC water would lead this, visually. If I understand the structure of those (horrible) mountain tiles you are using right, you should be able to just copy-paste the AI mountains above those in the tilepages. If want them in gray rather than brown (=different CSet) using 8bit on the tiles would save a lot of work I suppose.
