I found DKC Returns minecart/rocket levels to be a total drag on the game when I returned to it this year (I remember loving this game before).

The way the level design on the "wowness" was great. It's fun to see the level crumble or come together in these stages. But my issue is the ungodly poorly timed hazards forcing you to learn more from memory than your actual skill level. Just too many split second moves and battletoads like design.

Not to mention you die in one hit in these stages.

I found some of them just too unbearable to even play in my 2nd run through and I ended up rage quitting just out of sheer disappointment.

Playing The Guardian Legend again, but this time, I used a password generator to make the game MUCH, MUCH harder. I only begin with 1 bar of life instead of 8. More or less, welcome to me dying. A lot. I also made one so I could freely explore the entire map at the start, also with only 1 bar of life to start to see if I could get everything out of the areas without touching a corridor.

I picked up that game recently, what is the objective when you're put in the top-down walking areas?

I'm wondering if I should ever bother trying to unlock the Golden Temple.

That's the reward for getting every K-O-N-G in every level, every secret and puzzle token; right?

Your reward, the Golden Temple; is a very long, very hard area. It's basically, one level; but in its own way more difficult than anything you would have faced in the game up to this point other than the final boss.

And what do you get for beating that?

Access to mirror mode; where you play every level in reverse and can't use Diddy at all. I didn't even bother to do one level in that.

In ZC, I'm currently playing through Zodiac: Story of the Guardian again (using the latest demo) as well as playtesting Link and Zelda: Panoply of Calatia.

I actually didn't mind the minecart levels as much. They could be brute forced with memorization after a little while, but the harder regular platforming stages were a constant battle against the physics. The rocket barrel stages were the worst of both worlds, though.

Eh. While I haven't played DKCR, I will say that the original DKC had it's fair share of dumb design choices.
There were many levels that were just difficulty spikes (the two minecart levels, Ice Age and Tanked Up Trouble being highlights), usually early on in each world before you get access to either Funky or Candy for you to be able to save. These levels with difficulty spikes are usually defined by cheap difficlty itself; either way too many "make one error and you die" moments or not giving the player adequate time or room to dodge enemy attack.
Speaking of saving, why does the game give you several tough levels before you are given the ability to save in each world and then several easier levels afterwards? That sounds really backwards and makes for a pretty bad difficulty curve, compounded by your limited lives. The bosses in particular are easy, only K.Rool being threatening because his fight is so long.

I've been playing Yoshi's Island the past few days. So far it still holds to be one of my all time favorites and one of the few games where I can tolerate a sidescroller for a change. I'm nearing the end of the second world, so yeah. I'm actually at the Potted Ghost's castle in fact. I'm shamelessly embracing the nostalgia.

I have played Tropical Freeze back in... 2014 or 2015. Maybe 2014. It was pretty fun though I don't know how it compares to the other titles cause I never really played a Donkey Kong game outside the 64 one. But regardless I did enjoy it a lot and personally I found the loading times to be the worst part of the game. Maybe I should give the game another go. Though I still hear Xenoblade calling my name. It begs for me to complete it.

I always felt DKC3 had the best designed levels despite being considered the black sheep of the series.

The top-down sections have no objective other than finding another corridor shooter section to complete. The purpose of the top-down sections is to find and collect power ups and beat boss encounters to get powerups.

Corridors 1-10 I believe are the main objective while 11-20 are optional challenges that also give an item at the end.

Finally finished Fallout: New Vegas. Went for the Wild Card ending. I was originally going to side with Mr. House, but decided against it when he said to kill the Brotherhood of Steel.

So, now I've got Skyrim with all the DLC, as well as both Fallout 3 and New Vegas with all the DLC. My plan is to take a break from these games, and finish Final Fantasy XII first. I used a translation patch on the International Zodiac Job System version, and I had started it on emulator with the internal resolution ramped up. You apply a smoothing filter on the textures, as well as just a touch of sharpening so engravings on stone walls actually look engraved without affecting things like character textures too badly, and it looks damned amazing. I'll probably end up jinxing myself by saying this, but I don't really think that the remaster that Square's working on is going to look any better than how I've got this one set up.

Anyways, once I finish FFXII, I'm going to go back and replay Skyrim now that I have the DLC, but I've been spending the last few months looking up different mods. I've found a couple hundred of them that I want to try, so other than a TON of quest mods, I'm going to have something like SkyRe set up, alongside Deadly Dragons and Immersive Needs or Frostfall. I suck at FPS games, (and I couldn't decide between them) so I'm also going to have a mod that lets me have up to 100 followers, and play alongside my own personal AI army. (Along with the highest difficulty to compensate) I'm predicting it's going to be kind of insane, but probably pretty fun. Only real question when I get to that point is, should I record the madness and post it online? I don't think I've seen a follower military vs. an entire world designed to kill you.

Pretty much just to pick up power-ups and to serve as the hub for the Corridors. If you don't mind a spoiler, see below.

Spoiler

Each area has two mini-bosses, some weapons, power-ups and two corridors each. There are also some friendly Blue Landers that will act as a checkpoint. Simply entering a room with one will set your continue point to its room when you die. You can also get a password, but have fun with a 32 character long password with uppercase & lowercase letters and numbers. There are also some shops you can buy upgrades for chips and some you can only pick one item for a certain price. There is also a hint somewhere on how to open the corridors up. Some hints are more obvious than other. If you get stuck, I can point you in the right direction.

The area themes:

If you get stuck, I'd be willing to help you.

No option to invert the camera controls for everything or nothing? Not a game I'm interested in, it's worse that it randomly flips some axis sometimes and not other times. It's like Darksiders 1 where you can invert the X and Y axis for the camera but only 1 Axis is inverted when you pick up an object and try to aim where to toss it (Thankfully not an issue in the second game).

Nah, the remake has options for inverting the axis, but it is all or nothing. You can't separately adjust camera controls, and aiming controls. I personally prefer to have the camera horizontally inverted, but want aiming to be regular. I'm weird like that.

And on the subject of TPHD I didn't have much trouble with Epona's controls outside of anything I encountered in the original.

I also started playing Link to the Past on my actual SNES (on a CRT TV with composite cables, looks awesome) after years of playing a ROM or ports.

I kind of prefer the ones that are at least somewhat fitting or realistic. (Considering the only Elder Scrolls game I've played is Skyrim, and I'm relatively ignorant on the overarching lore, I've probably still got some unfitting ones in there) I think the only mod that's more bizarre that I've got on my list is a Mario-themed one called "Super Skyrim Bros". I'm excusing that one, since it starts in sleeping in a specific bed, as some sort of strange dream/drug trip. Other than that, everything else is pretty straightforward medieval-type stuff.

Just been playing Hyrule Warriors Legends. Have been for a couple months now. I have over 400 hours clocked in on it now, and am still loving it, and can't wait for the next DLC to come out. I have gone through all of the maps, and just need to finish A-ranking some missions, along with getting the remaining Tier 4 weapons, Skulltula's, and hearts, along with a lot of the things on the Koholint Map. I still need to run through Legend Mode again and finish up Easy, Hard, and Hero difficulties. All my characters are Level 75 or above, so I have been able to go back and wipe out some of those missions that were just tedious before.

I got guilted into playing Animal Crossing (GC) again, and I've been enjoying that. I've been playing a TON of Tomodachi Life, and recently bought Dynamite Headdy/ Wonder Boy in Monster World. I've also been somewhat playing Star Ocean: First Departure, and I've been playing some Kingdom Hearts Unchained X. (it's actually good)
