Yes, there is an extra key in all the levels from 1 to 7, which all matters when you get to level 8, where there are seven more locked doors than there are keys in that level. Kind of a radical element to quest design that I have yet to see be done in any other quest.
Artistic, I believe the extra key in level 1 can be found by pushing one of the eye statues in the entrance room to reveal stairs down to it. If you got that one, then the one you are missing is one of the many others in the level.

The boss is located in the upper right corner of the level, thus the right horn of the Taurus. I believe one of the north walls a few rooms away from the boss needs to be bombed, if my memory serves right. Look for clues in the walls for any that are bombable.
Glad your around...just went to level 5 (I'm really in level 3 but I wanted that sword and flippers..so used up my 2 extra keys to get them but figure I'll get them back when I finish level 5 later...may need your help, we will see...I hear it gets much harder although for now the playing is just plain fun!

On the search for the ocarina I opened the whole, but taken a better look at the block on the floor ..
I bombed that one too, did get the ocarina and went out of there
Since I was there already, never though on the whole in the wall... gee Man
some how I pressed the space bar and the whole thing went to hell -- will start all over(with my own rules
thanks
