Two games lately. First, I continue to remain hooked to Xenoblade X. I've got 100% exploration of all five continents, and now I'm going for all of NLA to get full 100% survey of Mira. After that, I wanna try getting an infinite overdrive build and taking down the Wanderer-King, who remains the only of the game's superbosses I haven't killed. Why is this game so long and fun?
In other news, I finally played Undertale. Did a neutral run, then did some hopping around with save files to see the unique content in pacifist and genocide runs. The game's... interesting. I enjoyed it, despite it having lots of flaws. The progression itself is a bit too linear for my liking, but the battle system, the bosses especially, were tons of fun. Sans especially stands out as one of my favorite video game bosses ever. I was gasping for breath at the very end, which is something I don't think any other boss has done to me. I only wish the rest of the bosses were that intense. They were fun, but he felt like the only incredibly challenging one. For good reason, granted, but still.
As far as the story goes though... I really liked it up to a certain point. Near the end though, it went downhill fast. I hate to be a downer, but I kinda really, really hated the neutral ending. I'd even go so far as to say it's one of the worst video game endings I've ever seen. In the span of a few seconds, it destroyed all the amazing buildup and power the game's story had in favor of bad meta elements and shock value. Pacifist ending's a little better, but still pretty bad. It was a mess of poorly explained plot elements, contrived rule-breaking for the sake of an "emotional" story, a bunch of boring "power of friendship" tropes that felt painfully corny, and event boss fights that, while they seemed awesome initially, had no sense of danger to them. Genocide's ending was actually my favorite, if for nothing else, for being able to murder a particular character who I despise with every fiber of my being. It still had elements to it that were pretty dumb though.
All in all, fun game, good (initially) story with a god-awful ending, and amazing music. It certainly didn't live up to the hype (not that I was expecting it to), but it was well worth my five bucks.
