I finished Xenoblade Chronicles X.
I'm not happy.
I was actually fuming when the game ended, perhaps more so than I should've been for a game, but it was an utter mess of disappointment. The story was never good, and it goes and decides to not bring any real closure either... then it opens up a whole new can of worms with a cliffhanger of all things! It couldn't just end, it had to leave that little loose end. Honestly, a bad story with a cliffhanger is worse than a bad story with closure. I mean it, this story was just bland, straightforward, full of holes, generally uninteresting altogether. I said above the sidequests were "arguably" more interesting than the main story, right? It's not arguable anymore, they are better. At least there I get to see a colony deal with actual issues, with xenophobia and incorporating various people and races into the city. And pizza guys who are more than what they seem.
But the main story just feels like a slap in the face to those who loved Xenoblade. Heck, from what I understand, plenty of older Xenogears and Xenosaga fans already look down on Xenoblade; I wonder what they must feel about X. (they're wrong by the way, Xenoblade is awesome)
Then there's the other steps backward, the unintuitive menus, the lifeless, repetitive, and lengthy combat, I've been over these. I honestly don't care for the music either, apart from some tracks; it's mainly the vocal tracks that bug me. Some are fine, but many don't seem suited to where they're being used. The continent themes are good, but NLA's songs are awful. In general, it just doesn't have the life and power Xenoblade's songs did. That, and Hiroyuki Sawano's compositions just start to sound really samey after a while. Same guy who composed Attack on Titan and Kill la Kill, for the record, the latter of which is one of my favorite anime soundtracks; that should tell you something.
Many of these are common complaints, and the director himself has addressed them and will keep them in mind for the inevitable sequel. I'll look forward to that with very tempered and cautious optimism... I know X was meant to be experimental with this new type of world, but it still wasn't the game or world I wanted. Shouldn't have called it "Xenoblade," to be honest.
I need to let it sit for a bit and see if I can regain any of those notions of fun I had before the terrible ending destroyed all of them. Right now, it's the worst 2015 game I've played.
Which also makes it the third-best.
