I highly enjoyed Metroid: Zero Mission more than most of the other games in the series. Easily my favourite 2D Metroid after Super Metroid and is my most favourite remake of a game ever. You don't have to like it, and I can understand if you prefer the NES design philosophies over modern ones, but lets not get into a debate about which game is the best.
Zero Mission does everything that a remake should do right, but it carries a few flaws. MZM doesn't just keep the structure of the original game, even faithful to the room layouts in many circumstances, and modernized and improved it so the rooms are actually memorable and well-designed; but it expanded on it by the addition of minibosses, new areas and was not afraid to bring powerups and abilities from Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion in. These powerups and abilities were among the most memorable from those games; with walljumping, edge grab, Super Missiles and even stuff like Gravity Suit and Space Jump taking starring roles in the game, and were integrated almost seamlessly. The graphical and audio updates were nice as were modern Metroid features like the map being added (very important!).
Perhaps my only big complaint with the game is that it didn't actually do anything new that the previous games haven't done until you beat Tourian, but that weighs little on my mind compared to everything awesome that the game did considering it was a remake.

I love that Metroid 1 and 2 don't have maps. Btw, my Metroid ranking is 1>Prime 1>2>Super. I never liked the sequels/inferior clones of Super and Prime.

I won't pretend to be a Metroid expert, but doesn't Zero Mission have a lot of potential for sequence breaking and stuff? The Chozo statues are handholdly, yes, but you don't have to use them. I always saw it as "If you're good at Metroid, skip these. If you're stuck, here's a hint."Transforming Metroid 1 in a Super Metroid clone isn't my idea of a good remake. A good remake should maintain the non-linearity. It's simply a different game with different design. Also, chozo statues as handholding... you always know where to go.

Correct Russ. Zero Mission has several ways to sequence-break the game if you knew what you were doing (eg. Early Super Missiles, doing Ridley before Kraid, etc), much like Super Metroid with shenanigans like Mockballing and Super Short Speed Boosting.
I will say that there is at least one, maybe two, Chozo statue that you were forced to use; but the rest were well and truly optional. They were also recharge stations, which serves to reinforce the notion that they were for less skilled Metroid players.

The thing is that in the original Metroid you don't need sequence breaking... the game is already opened. Zero mission just switched the gameplay to Super Metroid style. Nothing wrong with that, but we played Super Metroid a decade before, which was better in every way. I have enough of that with Super.
The three first Metroid games have vastly different gameplay, after Super, all the games became into Super clones.

Perhaps my next gameplay target when I'm done with my current crop is a Metroid romp. It would help me get reacquainted with titles I've either only played once or haven't played in ages, as well as allow me to actually play Zero Mission and experience it for myself. Plus it's been too long since I've played II and Fusion, games I remember liking but don't remember too much of.
Said current crop is same as last time. Also there's a save file of FSA sitting around with only two worlds down... I need to hook my old TV back up in my new room to just play that. Was hoping we could get another outlet in quickly but that doesn't seem to be happening, so...

Super Metroid is NOT better in every way compared to Zero Mission. Primarily, the controls in Super Metroid suck ass nuggets as does the switching between weapons. The Control Freak mod largely fixes it though, the only thing I dislike about the mod is it makes it far too easy to wall jump which makes sequence breaking a breeze.
Not being punished for accidentally pressing Select too many times and skipping over the weapon you want to use (Punishment worsens as you collect more items in SM)? Yes please!
Easily being able to switch between primary and secondary weaponry on the fly? Yes please!
Morph ball jumping? Yes please!

Btw, SUPER Zero Mission (snes) has some amazing changes in weapon balance, enemy balance, spin jump, shinespark... it makes the game much better.

Well right now I've been playing Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. It's pretty fun, though frustrating when your playing with people that don't know what they're doing.

I know! It's so frustrating! And it makes it worse when they ignore your signals on what to do.

Well that's Nintendo Co-Op for ya. Though you can blacklist players can't you where you won't keep on getting matched with morons?

Yes, I'm sure finding incompetent teammates no good at the game is exclusive to Nintendo's online games and doesn't happen anywhere else. ![]()
