Ah I see. Well, I can get one of the flames, which is right in the centre of the room. Any idea as to how I can reach the other two? Dampé doesn't seem able to climb stairs or any of that and I found more patches of dirt in places he can't reach.

If I remember right, there are two platforms which move, each related to one of the switches on the floor that, when you lead him to the platforms then step on the switches, will bring him up. You have to rush to where it goes though in order to lead him to where he has to go before he falls off though. it's best to play the inverted song of time to slow down his walking speed though. It shouldn't be that hard to do once you see what you have to do :)

Dracula X and Donkey Kong Country Returns both down now, meaning I'm free to move on to Harmony of Dissonance.

Donkey Kong Country Returns may be a bit better than I remember, maybe not, and I'm honestly not entirely sure if those extra thirty frames per second helped significantly seeing as it's been a long time since I've beaten the game. The bosses certainly didn't get better though, with most sporting at least one bullshit maneuver that's impossible to predict, and incorporate too much RNG for my liking; fortunately Tropical Freeze vastly improved on the bosses. And it was still a bit rough around the edges in points where it didn't seem to flow as well as it could have, but otherwise, solid game, and as it stands, I think my ranking of the DKC series goes like this: Donkey Kong Country > Tropical Freeze > Diddy's Kong Quest > Returns > Dixie Kong's Double Trouble.

Dracula X is the hardest Castlevania I've played so far, and my least-favorite probably. SomecallmeJohnny hit the nail right on the head when he said that this game feels like it was designed for Castlevania IV's Simon but they decided to use the stiff controls of the previous games instead. Not only that, but invincibilty frames are noticeably fewer, causing you to take even more damage than you would normally. If this game had Castlevania IV's controls, it'd be fantastic, but with the stiff controls forcing artificial difficulty on you yet again, the Classicvania games aside from IV are becoming less and less my thing. I still plan on giving Rondo of Blood a shot, since good things are said about that one (and good things generally are not said about Dracula X), and I suppose 3's worth a try sometime, but it seems my heart belongs to the Metroidvanias.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Oh Lordy... that game was HARD compared to the previous three DKC games (as a child, I dominated those three games). You wouldn't imagine HOW MANY DAMN TIMES I died on those cart levels. Still great fun though, heh. :)

I had an embarassingly hard time with Chain Link Chamber in DKC 2 as a kid. Took me almost a solid year to beat that one level. The rest of the game was simple enough.

As for what I'm playing currently; just about to wrap up a playthrough of Final Fantasy on my NES. Love that game.

Harmony of Dissonance down. I enjoyed its controls and moments of nonlinearity, but it was a very easy game with very few secrets, and honestly a pretty lackluster soundtrack. Now before I say this next bit, remember that I am a guy who greatly loves A Link to the Past, Oracle of Ages, and Metroid Prime 2 for their dual-world mechanic. With that in mind: Harmony of Dissonance does it and I don't like it. It feels kind of tedious to travel between the two versions of the castle to open paths and find all upgrades, and also comes off as a bit of forced-padding. Symphony of the Night had the inverted castle, yes, but that one was a lot more fun and pulled off a lot better. This felt like it was attempting to match Symphony of the Night by arbitrarily doubling the castle size with this mechanic. There were a couple of cool bits, but not nearly enough to make me love it like I do those other games I mentioned above.

Also the cross is broken as hell in this game. Maybe it always was but I was too distracted by holy water to care. Apparently some of the magic combinations were even more broken but I never messed with them.

So yeah, this honestly was one of the lesser Castlevanias I've played so far. However I get to look forward to the Sorrow games next, whee.

In harmony of Dissonance, the biggest issue I have with it are the many, many rooms that are just zig-zag right to left, left to right, right to left etc. and these rooms are typically very large or long and what's worse? Usually used to connect areas together! Enjoy going through them over and over and over and over and back and forth and back and forth and ohmygod I died of boredom shortly after gaining RSI.

Those rooms, they just kill the whole experience for me in that game. It's just flat out really bad and really lazy design and it's used way too much in the game! The worst one is probbably above the first castle interior room you start the game near.

Harmony is a very lazy attempt in doing a poor mans SOTN in GBA and it shows xd Sorrow games are WAY better, and they have great castles.

BTW, I forgot to say that the japanese version of Castlevania III (Akumajou Densetsu) is way better than the international edition. Play that edition, TS. Though, the international version also worth a visit for the extra challenge and other interesting major changes.

For single player experience, the first Super Mario Kart is so above of any sequel that  it's offensive. 150cc Special Cup is simply a blast. It's a shame how much they simplified the gameplay after the first entry... Feathers are just love, CPU is highly competitive and... NO UNFAIR BLUE SHELLS. Nothing beats the first Rainbow Road!

They should release a hack of Super Mario Kart with 8 players support, the world would end in that case xd

PD: So, yeah, i'm playing Super Mario Kart...

Funny, SomecallmeJohnny said the same as you regarding Castlevania III: Starting out, play the Famicom version instead. That was always my intention. And I'd also probably play the "Redaction" hack of Simon's Quest, which speeds up dialogue and the day/night transitions and cleans up the text. Maybe. I also thought it could be entertaining if I tortured myself by playing the original version instead, but I already know most of the big secrets, which is pretty much the only thing Redaction does is better hint at them; it doesn't change gameplay itself at all. I dunno. I'll Alucard leap over cross that bridge when I come to it.

EDIT: I take it back, apparently the hack doubles Death's HP, not that Death was ever difficult, but that's the only gameplay change. Also I didn't realize the hack took out the false hints... those I actually kind of liked. Yeah, it was douchey, but it was also fun in a frustrating way. Ah well, again, will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Maybe the fake hints weren't in the original edition? I don't remember, I didn't play it since at least 10 years and I forgot about this game at times. But they messed a lot the international release, so I though that can be the truth (or not).

The original release had false hints, but they weren't quite so completely wrong/misleading as they are in the international version, their more misdirection than nonsensical in the Japanese version as far as I know.

There's another translation hack that adds a MAP to the game! and I forget which one does it, but at least one of the 2 big translation patches re-adds the sign post interaction that the International version removed (You can read sign posts/names of areas in the japanese version! This makes a ton of the clues easier to understand).
