I think a lot of quest designers can learn something from that Oracle of Seasons map: look at how much empty space there is on each screen.

Nintendos maps in a whole are well layed out but are uninteresting and boring.

Spoiler

Speaking of gb maps, this is something I made a little while back; nothing too extravagant, because gb sets (and honestly most sets derived from gb tiles) usually look better when they aren't having a million things going on at once on a screen-to-screen basis. Also because it's the area about the first dungeon and there's really not much reason to go all-out for that.
[Yes, I see the tree error up top, don't worry about it.]

I actually remember Revfan saying something positive about simple mountain usage years and years ago. Granted, the example he used was... a bit much in the opposite direction, but still.

That map really nice looking. great job icon_smile.gif icon_thumbsup.gif

But you seem to have a error with orange tree at the middle row of screens. get that fixed and it'll look great.

That is the first statement you made i can partially agree with. Yes Nintendo's maps are incredibly boring.

Nice screen! Simple but good. :)
Just a question, does Link jump down from the north walls?

I'm curious Octorok. Is that boss a scripted boss or a multi-screen boss?

It's a very large multiple screen boss. In fact, it's one screen away from being a whole map big.

No, he jumps up onto the boss from the lower floor. A staircase appears where the gap in the wall border is once you defeat the boss.

Crikey, that's one hell-of-a non-scriptied boss! I can't wait to see what the boss is like icon_smile.gif

Got bored, so I decided to mess around with Orion's LTTP Tileset. I decided to use the Dark World mountains instead of the Light World mountains.

Besides the cave on the side borders of the screen, I like it, nails the aLttP feel very well. icon_smile.gif

Thanks Shane! Yeah, I agree about the cave as caves should be closer to the center most of the time as they should be a focus within the screen. I was just messing around with this tileset. This tileset is very dis-organized and hard to use, but the palettes are pretty accurate and it has a lot of tiles.

I like it, but i really think the light world mountains would look better there. The cave tiles just seem kinda out of place. icon_shrug.gif

But i agree with Shane, it gives off a perfect Alttp feel icon_wink.gif

It takes up so many screens because of how its attack pattern is set up. And the map also includes the intro and finishing blow cutscenes.

The problem with this screen is that it's over detailed.
With GB, you don't need so many things on one screen to make it look good.
