I understand there's been some issues as of late regarding how people handle having their screenshots criticized. This is one of the main reasons I was opposed to limiting the screenshot thread to critiques. But forget about that for a minute.

thoughts?

As much as I would love to say this is a good screen...No. No it isn't.

For one thing, there's a graphical error on that mountain and...oh...I just saw what this screen is supposed to be...This is the greatest thing ever.

Okay, so I've been tinkering with the Pure Extreme Tileset, and I've made a few screens.

IPB Image
A humble abode.

IPB Image
Octorocks! Oh, and I spy a bombable wall...

IPB Image
A refreshing pond, the current moving to the right.

IPB Image
Octorocks hide in the trees...hm, those trees look suspicious...

IPB Image
Hmm! Looks like we've found a dungeon!

These are some of the first screens I've made with the Pure Extreme Tileset. Feel free to critique on how I could spice them up, if need be. icon_smile.gif

Ooh, great job!

1. The house is a bit too empty. try adding a book and a fireplace!

2. A great crossroad screen, but a little too plain. Add some dirt or short grass.

3. Can't complain, just add an octorok or two icon_thumbsup.gif

4. Love it!

5. The mountains seem a bit bare on the left. Try adding some more trees and ground detail.

Thanks, Lynker. I'll keep those things in mind. icon_smile.gif

The next set of screenshots I'll be showing will be my first attempt at a slightly freeform-style dungeon, so wish me luck!

Try filling out the corners more, the screens look kind of empty. Also, everything looks kind of boxy... like the pond. It is too rectangular imo. Try adding more curves and such. Maybe add more ground detail as well to make it look less empty, although that is up to you.

They look good, but also consider using different palletes; it could give the screens more atmosphere and overall make them look better. A very good beginning imo, just work on some things and youll be set.

I feel these screens would look better in the classic tileset. What I mean by that is that there is an EXTREME lack of detail.
You might also want to try making the mountain edges more rigid and natural. They look far too straight.
You also misuse the mountains in screenshot 2 and 4.

I was wondering about those mountains from screen 2 and 4, actually. For some reason, I can't find a way to make them look more natural unless I use the diagonal corner tiles.

I can see why you would say they would look better in the Classic Tileset, though, especially since while I was making these screens, I was using a Classic Tileset quest as reference (That alone pretty much gives away what I'm trying to do with the Pure Extreme Tileset).

Comments and suggestions on these screens?

And yes, you CAN fall down the holes! icon_biggrin.gif (I even ripped and edited the MC falling sprites!)

Also, notice Link? He has brown sleeves now! They fit in more with Pure Remembrance than the original ones. If you want them, shoot me a PM.

In the first shot I don't like how you put the pits so close to the edge of the screen, and in the second I don't like how you have all these different mountain formations in the same screen. They both look really good, though, don't get me wrong.

Hm, I guess I could move those pits down a tile.
I like the mountains, personally.
And thank you icon_smile.gif

Lynker, I'm not gonna lie. Those are probably the best screenshots you've ever made. I only have two things I'd like to see fixed, both in the first screen. The pit on the bottom's a little close to the edge, so Link will walk into the screen and fall into it (which would be pretty annoying). And the top left corner seems a little empty. Otherwise, they're perfect. You're really improving; if someone showed me those screens a few month again and said you would be making them in only a few months, I wouldn't believe them. Keep up the great work!

icon_drool.gif Lynker...as Russ said, those are probably the best screens you've ever made. On the second shot, the mountain hugs up against the bottom of the screen in a way that interrupts the flow, but other than that and what Russ said, it's fine. Just out of curiosity though, why does Link have the red candle so early in the game?

That made me feel great. Not even kidding. icon_love.gif
I wil fix that, it does seem a little close. I'll move it up!
I'll add another small mountain there, it is a mountain range, after all.
Thank you, so so much.
And adding on that, I would like to thank DLT and Moo2wo for their inspiration on me.
And thank you, Russ. I feel so special icon_smile.gif

Thanks so much! ^-^ Another guy like you makes me feel great saying I did good!
I think i'll fix that mountain, I really didn't notice until now.

And he has the red candle/lantern now because if you think about it, it really doesn't make sense to use a weapon once per screen.
It uses a bit of magic, so you people will only be able to use it sparingly! Plus, it's fun icon_razz.gif

Thanks again, both of you!

I like 'em, good job.
As other people have said, I'd move the pits away from the edges of the screen a bit. That's pretty annoying gameplay-wise sometimes. And I'd move the bridge in the first shot to the right a bit, I think it looks kids weird being on the mountain so much.
