So I decided to try my hand at the GB set to see if I was any good at it and, well, see the results for yourself.

I certainly can't say it's my best work... Anybody have advice on how I'm supposed to use this set, and how to make this screen look better?
Oh my. I don't like it much at all. Actually, I'm disappointed. I've seen you make so much better screens. The biggest problem here next to the actual layout of the screen is the tile choice. I won't even say anything about the palette, I think we both agree that a palette you need sunglasses for to look at isn't the best choice. :/
I don't understand why you've blocked off that space on the left side. It doesn't look like a place any player would want to go to. The trees look oddly out of place. Like they've just been put there for the heck of it, not to any gameplay-related purpose (such as interaction or even just blocking off a path or obstacles to make a fight on the screen more interesting). As far as the actual shape of the mountains is concerened, I believe something much more simple - even a straight line maybe - would've worked way better. That roof in the bottom left corner is one of the things I think unexuseable. Put your trees in these corners rather than just somewhere on the side where they serve no purpose whatsoever. :/ And houses are important objects. If a screen features a house (or two, or three) put them in places that are understandable and important (like in the middle, to the top) instead of in the very corner. :S
As for tile choice: With GB, it's always better to go a little more simplistic. I'm not sure why you wanted all the mountains without the border (can Link jump down all these ledges?) but I suppose I look past this. The grass detail is a... disaster. If you study the original Nintendo maps a little you will find that each area uses two types of grass detail: one for the green underground and one for the pale underground. The rocks are next what puzzle me. The one on the top looks kind of important, like the left-overs of a lock-rock (nice word!) or an explosion. What sense am I to make of it? The one in the middle looks like it's been lowered. Actually, I believe it's supposed to be layered on water to give a submerged look. The only rock I really understand is the lowest one. Is it liftable or moveable? With such a tile, I'd try to interact. It would even be okay if there's nothing beneath it, but if it just were there for the heck of it, it'd disappoint me. Also, one type of clouds is enough.
I took your idea and tried to turn it into something that's a little cleaner (but to be honest, I don't even like the idea very much :S I think overlook screens should'nt be entered from the left and/or right and go more than one screen; so I don't like the result very much either...). All the elemets are there (I believe) I've simply refined them a litte.

Edit: Anyone else thinks that the ZC player window is too large for true GB style? It bugged me forever.
Edit2: Found this old thing, heh:
