Back to Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Man, is STR gear really broken in that. Basically, there are a few types of armor in my eyes:
Type 1: Raw Defense Armor - Pretty much only gives +DEF, but a large amount. Some give other benefits, such as Needle Armor also giving +10 STR or the Dark Armor giving a whopping 550 DEF at the expense of 10 STR, INT and LUK.
Type 2: Magic Armor - Robes. They give moderate protection, but excel by giving very high +INT boosts, which accelerates the rate at which Nathan recovers his Mind Power, the biggest being the Sage Robe for +500 INT.
Type 3: The DPS Armor - Or suits as they usually are. These armors have poor DEF ratings, but give +STR. The best in this set gives +50 STR, and is understandably hard to get. However, when combined with STR boosting accessories, Nathan becomes a powerhouse.
With the Soldier Fatigues (+50 STR, +120 DEF, +10 LUK) and a pair of Strength Armbands (+100 STR, -25 DEF, -25 INT, -25 LUK each), that's +250 STR. In normal mode aka "Vampirekiller" mode, that bonus is equivalent to leveling up 25 times. So at level 40, I am essentially equal to Nathan being at level 65 without any +STR equipment. By the way, I'm not sure what you call this, but the way damage is calculated, every time your STR doubles, you do 4x as much damage. So to double your damage, you just multiply your STR by the square root of 2. For triple damage, multiply by the square root of 3. I guess exponential growth? DEF is simpler; every time your DEF doubles, you take half as much damage as before. So if you take 120 damage with 300 DEF, you'll only take 60 with 600 DEF.
At lowish levels, that extra 250 STR was enough to almost increase my damage by two and a half times. With that boost, I hit a Wind Demon for 97 damage with the whip while without anything on, I only did 39 damage a hit with the whip. Pretty big difference there. I've played the game enough times to the point defense isn't something I worry about and to be honest, even with shoddy defense gear, the enemies don't hit too terribly hard unless you're playing Magician, Shooter or Thief modes. And in Fighter mode? You have so much HP and defense you would barely notice the difference.
One dislike about CotM however is that almost all of your DSS card combos run off your STR stat. This is a huge problem when you play in Magician mode, because your STR is much lower (71 to start instead of 100). All your INT does is make your MP recharge faster. So in Magician mode, you have all the cards at the start, but most combos do lousy damage because you have such a low STR stat. Then again, you're expected to spam the hell out of the Thunderbird summon so yeah. Good thing Fighter is fully banned from the DSS card system, because Fighter Nathan would be way overpowered. Then again, he's so powerful that not having any magical abilities is a joke, especially when the bonus area (Battle Arena) bans your usage of DSS cards. Pretty crippling not being allowed to use magic when you can't use it to begin with, no? Especially when your STR and DEF are so ridiculously high at low levels that you can cheese the Battle Arena at level 40 where with other characters, you may want to wait until level 50.
All in all, I played CotM too much, especially in high school. I've done just about every reasonable challenge for it, although not with every game mode, such as:
- No DSS cards (Nathan can't use DSS cards in Fighter mode, so it doesn't count for that mode)
- No armor or accessories
- No sub-weapons (should do it on Shooter mode where you're heavily reliant on them)
- No usable items
- Beat Dracula below level 40
- No MaxHP, MaxMP or Max Heart increase items
- Super segmented speedrun (gave up after losing patience with RNG and farming rare drops)
Yeah, I think I just about wore that game out. I never really did a speedrun of the game though, so I was thinking about doing a segmented time attack for fun some time.
