Well, to be fair on the Ness/Lucas end of it all, they did put Earthbound on Virtual Console and I'm going to assume it sold like crazy at that point because no one wants to pay $100+ for a used copy on eBay.  Well okay some people do but they're neeeeeeeeerds.  I think Ness and Lucas will stay, and I'm really hoping so.  I have to admit I don't care much for Ness outside of the original Smash Bros., but I used Lucas a lot.

 

Also, ROB was in Brawl and when was the last time he was significant to anything?  Heck, they put Pit from Kid Icarus in Brawl back when his last game had come out for the original Gameboy.  I honestly don't see why people get so worried about them disappearing into obscurity.

When Earthbound came out on Wii U virtual console, it costed more the any other virtual console game (Every one of them costs about $4, except for Earthbound, which costs $9.), and there was a big trailer thing for it on the E-Shop. Based on that alone, I can safely hope that Ness will return in this game.

Ness will most likely return. I don't think they would ever drop one of the fighters from the original game.

Regarding Lucario returning, I really hope they change his Final Smash to something related to Mega Evolution. But I think Mega Evolution may only be reserved to Pokemon Trainer if they decide to bring him back. And heck, if PKMN Trainer does come back, they may give the player the option to play as the female trainer.

@Aevin  There are samples of Pat Cashman (the announcer in Brawl) saying the names of the cut characters.  There are samples of him saying Roy, Mewtwo, and others.

I imagine they wanted to record as many voice samples in one sitting as possible. It makes sense that they'd record voices for more things than necessary—just in case—than fewer. It's like how the Melee announcer says "Giga Bowser" in the sound test. It wasn't used in the remainder of the game, but it would have been good to have that clip if necessary.

I've got a bit of doubt on the game, from a technical perspective the gameplay of the Wii U version will likely be hindered by what the 3DS is capable of (To allow you to play Wii U users with a 3DS and vice versa). Kinda like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate which was a pretty big let down for me... and Monster Hunter 4 is 3DS exclusive :/

You'll also probably get some pretty shoddy upscaled versions of the same textures found in the 3DS version, applied to the Wii U version just like what happened with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Though maybe Nintendo won't suck ass [like Capcom does] at this cross platform thing)

Actually, they've already said there won't be cross play between the two systems. There's some sort of mysterious "customization" that can be transferred from 3DS to Wii U, but that's about it. The DS version shouldn't hinder the Wii version, and I'm pretty sure the speed and mechanics will operate similar to the Wii version on 3DS.

Cross Play would be weird considering that each version has their own stages.  I'm sure they'll share a couple of the basic ones, like Final Destination or Battlefield, but other than that, I can't imagine they'll have much in common.

I'm just hoping the two versions are similar enough so that I can practice on one and have those skills transfer to the other. Although, I have noticed that many of the character models appear smaller and portioned differently on 3DS vs Wii U.

Man, does anyone else remember how terrible those other Super Smash Bros. games were?  What a waste of my teenage years.  If only they'd had cross play and cloud saving.

You know, the titles seem weird. Yeah yeah, I'm a nitpicky freak when it comes to those things. Super Smash Bros Universe (Wii U) and Dimensions (3DS) would of worked, maybe.

 

Also what is "cloud saving"? I certainly entered the dumb zone here.
