Over the last couple of days (rather Monday and Tuesday), I watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica again. Damn good show, more fun the second time because now I could pick out the little hints and foreshadowings of the plot. The reason I rewatched it was in anticipation of the release of the third movie, and about damn time too. After watching it... my reactions are pretty mixed at this point. Time for the big spoilers.

Spoiler

Not trying to delay Cowboy Bebop, honest. That shall be started shortly.

Death Note Spoilers

Staff note: Edited this to put that in spoiler tags, since that could ruin the series for somebody who hasn't seen it yet.

Starting watching Black Lagoon. So far, it feels like I'm watching a western movie. It's pretty good so far. I like the action.

Rewatching Yu Yu Hakusho, such a classic. I own all of it, but I never actually got around to season four. This was ages ago when I bought them, so I thought, you know what? I'm going to start this up again.

Let's see if I make it all the way up through season four so I can see how it ends!

Next in Line for Anime: Slayers (Try), re-watch number one-million. Really though, I have most of it memorised from past views. Maybe I'll mix some Bakuretsu / Sorcerer Hunters into the list. I haven't re-watched that series in about five years.

At present, I'm re-reading Heretics of Dune (another favourite); and watching some LPs (Jubbz, MeleeWizard, Eppy).

So I'm just curious-- Where do you guys learn about these great new animes? Maybe I'm just out of the loop since I'm no longer going to conventions regularly, but every new anime I've tried, I've given up after three episodes or so. It's mostly been stuff on netflix (I tried Princess Jellyfish the other day? Could not watch...) but how do you know what's good and what's terrible? Or is it just trial and error?

I make a point to rewatch the entire series at least once a year.  I'm going to Fanime (an anime convention in San Jose on Memorial Day weekend) this year cosplaying Yusuke.  I'm going to have a blast.  =D

Also, Log Horizon is pretty interesting; it's almost like a cross between Spice and Wolf and Sword Art Online.  I rather like that they aren't focusing on the MMO content and rather how people would be in that circumstance.

I think I'll just watch Log Horizon this animu season instead of the Summer Shite.

I mean, after being double deckered with two surprise gay endings in a row, I'd like to avoid that again. *inb4socialjustice*

I just started watching Psycho-Pass and I am loving it so far. I really like futuristic atmosphere and the characters are pretty sweet. The story is really keeping me engaged. I'm putting Black Lagoon on hold because of this.

Horray! Sword Art Online is on Netflix! I'll be watching that soon. The Blu-ray for this anime is unbelievably overpriced.

It was dubbed by Aniplex, who are known to be expensive. Don't hold your breath about the show itself though. Its animation is gorgeous and its music is enjoyable, but the pacing isn't very good, there's a lot of wasted potential with the amazing world created, some plot points are rushed or just outright stupid, and the second half of the series is too bland and pointless and (occasionally) sexual and a waste of time. I think the show could've been much better if they ironed out the stupidity and just made the first arc extended into a more fleshed-out 20-something episode series. The dubbing is pretty bland too, and I had to fight temptation to switch to the sub version when Yui showed up. This is coming from a guy who normally doesn't mind dubs, except when they're no good; I'll fight tooth and nail to tell you Gurren Lagann's dub is far superior to the original, for example.

Basically I'm warning you not to have high expectations. You might find more enjoyment in the show if you have low or no expectations.

Meanwhile with myself, I've finally started on Cowboy Bebop and am a little over halfway through it. So far, I like it. I do dig this space-adventure-type stuff, it's almost like an anime version of Firefly, or vice-versa since Bebop came first, but I use that comparison loosely since they're not that close alike, it was just the closest comparison I could make. I enjoy the characters and the dubbing is quite superb as well, but who couldn't love anything Steve Blum does? Looks like the characters' backstories are starting to piece themselves together though, as is an overarching plot. Hope it don't disappoint.

On the side I'm watching a short, cute little anime called Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth I found while digging around Anime News Network, and I, being susceptible to cute things, decided to check it out with my friend. It's about a young Japanese girl named Yune who was brought to late 1800s Paris by a French traveler (who looks like a taller, thinner Iroh with hair). Only two episodes left and one special apparently, but so far it's been cute and well-written for what it is. Nothing too special, but a nice little cute and entertaining show.

Log Horizon is still on the horizon (*shot*), but I think I've decided that I wanna watch Kill la Kill again after I finish Cowboy Bebop. I enjoyed that show way too much and want to give it another run.

I'm 1/2 way through with Log Horizon, and already its loads better than SAO.  SAO has so much potential, but it squanders itself with its pacing...

Log Horizon is much more political than I thought it would, and for me it makes it a lot more engaging.  It's almost like SAO meets Spice and Wolf.

Other than the Spice and Wolf bit (since I have zero knowledge of that show) that's honestly exactly what I wanted to hear, and didn't think to say it earlier when LtM said the same thing. I felt like what SAO needed was more discussion, more politics. So I'm definitely looking forward to that. Oh, interesting note, the other show I mentioned, Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth, it's by the same studio as Log Horizon. The animation is pretty gorgeous in that show too, so that's something else to look forward to when I get to it.

Got through the art mystery episodes in Psycho Pass. Those three episodes were intense and f***ed up all at the same time. This is an example of one of the worst possible ways to die in an anime.
