Quake is a great game, but whether it is better is a matter of opinion. You can try out the 1-episode shareware version (similar to how most id games in the past offered), and if you like it, you can register or buy the retail version (preferably the latter).
One problem I've personally had with the latest development autobuild release of DarkPlaces (I use the 64-bit built, so YMMV) is that I couldn't get the 'center view' button to work, even when configured via the options menu. Oh yeah, you will need a decent graphics card to benefit from DarkPlaces' graphics features.
Is the DarkPlaces port still being developed? And yeah for 90's shoot-em up games I tend to prefer BLOOD 1 and Quake 1 over every other FPS. Blake Stone, Hexen and Heretic get honorable mentions though. Unreal Tournament 99 is my favourite arena FPS.
Edit: It is being maintained still, also for a current link to the very awesome Re-texture/Re-model project, click here: http://qrp.quakeone.com/

Majora's Mask 3D currently, then probably Rayman Legends, or maybe another playthrough of ALBW.
I played DKC2 recently, and just realized after all these years, that the title is actually "Diddy's Kong Quest" and not "Diddy Kong's Quest". >.>

Moving towards a little bit of Crystalis now. "Chri-still-is" or "Chri-stahl-is?" I pronounce it the latter of the two personally. Anyway, that game proves that the NES had great potential for 8-way movement. Even if you can only lunge your sword forward, combat works beautifully. Yes, I know you can charge your sword, but that's impractical during fast paced boss fights. Not to mention the damage increase is hardly noticeable unless you're using a level 3 charge and even then, I only really find the Sword of Fire's and Sword of Thunder's useful as the Sword of Wind's is pathetic and Sword of Water's only seems to work reliably on one boss, and only because he's so damn fast.
So yeah, Crystalis proves you can have good fighting even if you can only stab. I guess for those ZC'ers that never played it, imagine Link being able to move while stabbing, moving very fast and can charge his sword to release projectiles. Having the different elemental swords is nice, but one flaw is sometimes it's a pain switching from sword to sword because one monster can only be hurt by the Sword of Fire where another one nearby is only affected by the Sword of Water. Some of the dungeons become really maze like and some items are hard to find without a guide or a ton of exploration. But the biggest flaw is only having two save files and accidentally saving over another save file! You also have to do a decent amount of grinding, as many enemies are completely immune to your attacks below a certain level. Thankfully, this holds true for enemies; once your defense is too high, you start getting bounced around harmlessly as well with a high pitched "PING!" noise. If only I knew how to rip SFX from games that don't have sound test menus; I'd die to have SFX from Crystalis.
Anyway, as for actual progress, I'm up to the point I just beat the Vampire boss in the first real dungeon. Currently level 3 and getting to level 4 so I can defeat the next boss. I still have to get the Sword of Fire; I haven't gone to Oak yet since I didn't turn in the Statue of Onyx for the Gas Mask. I honestly should hold off on grinding until I have the Sword of Fire, since the mushrooms give 8 EXP a kill and drop to a single hit of the Sword of Fire, compared to multiple from the boar like enemies that only give 5 EXP and throw their axes, making them much slower and more dangerous to kill. That is one huge negative; this game has a lot and I mean a LOT of mandatory grinding. Luckily later on, the enemies start giving much more EXP per kill, especially the scorpions in the final area.
In conclusion, Crystalis would be in my top 5 obscure NES games list for sure.

Crystalis obscure o.O? Besides Adventure of Link, It's the more famous action jrpg in nes.
Btw, I replayed Crystalis a month ago. It's a very charming and addictive game thanks to the fast pace.

To be fair, Crystalis isn't going to be the first game that people think of when it comes to the NES. If I asked a random person about good NES games, I would probably get told about the well-known ones like Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, Contra, Mega Man, etc. You know, the ones anyone that can even dare call him/herself an NES fan would know inside and out. Crystalis just doesn't have that kind of a legacy. It's one of the lesser known NES titles that was a great game, along with others like Faxanadu,The Guardian Legend and cult classics like River City Ransom. So perhaps saying "lesser known" title would be more appropriate?
Which reminds me, what would you define a game that's obscure, but is just average and easy to overlook? Like I'm saying it's one of those games almost nobody has heard of that is good, but has either translation errors or has something else that makes it forgettable, such as the SNES title Brain Lord. I think it's a good game, but the translation is awful and the gameplay kind of gets stale and in the final dungeon, just all out frustrating enough to make a calm person pound his fists hard enough to shatter his desk. I mean you have platforms that crumble as soon as your feet hit them and on top of that, magnetic enemies that pull you into them, making you fall and have to restart the room. Then you have pitch black mazes you have to feel your way around with no idea where to go.
I did always seem to get the oddball games as a kid. Other examples include Firestriker, Brutal - Paws of Fury, Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3D and Pac Man 2: The New Adventures. The first one is like a medieval setting that somehow hybrids an action-adventure game with glorified soccer. The second is a fighting that that makes you wish you had Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. Jim Power...jesus christ. That game was BRUTAL. Imagine Contra with a weak jump, bad hit detection and difficulty comparable to NES Battletoads. Then you have Pac Man 2: The New Adventures. Not the best game, but the concept is unique at least of using a slingshot and a voice to control Pac Man indirectly. It's also fun now and then to go back just to mess with poor Pac Man, whether it's getting him angry on purpose or just seeing how many ways you can kill him off. Definitely prefer the SNES version since the music's tempo changes based on Pac Man's mood.

Labyrinth is a weird one for the NES.
-Of course is based off the movie.. It looks like it has so much 'd*mnz potential as an English release.' Or almost like a Zelda clone in a way but, alot different.

Great obscure nes/famicom games for me are The Guardian Legend, Solstice, Mr.Gimmick, Legacy of the Wizard, Sweet Home, Captain Tsubasa 2, Baby Upa, Nazo no Murasamejou... Crystalis, Blaster Master or River City Ransom are well know, I think. But well, who cares? xd
Famicom is the best console of all time, imo. The catalog is gorgeous and it fit my tastes perfectly. I was more a "Snes boy" when I was younger, but the older I get, the more that I love the Nes.

So lately I've been playing Super Smash Wii U/3DS almost exclusively. I lost my stylus for my 3DS so I haven't been playing Etrian Odyssey IV since not being able to properly map really bugs me. ):
In Smash, I've been really trying to get better with Rosalina. I'd like to think I've been making progress, but I'm not 100% sure. My main measure has been 1 vs 1 For Glory so far. It isn't the best measure from my understanding, so I'll have to see about other means of sparring. Aside from practicing Rosalina, I've also been trying to get better with Robin on the side.

Gah, I HATED Pacman 2... I got it as a kid and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to play it so I gave it up.
I also got annoyed at Legacy of the Wizard, though I did enjoy that game. I just wish it was a bit clearer on what you had to do in it.
I used to play Spy vs Spy on the NES system... that was a fun game for playing against someone! You basically booby trapped the rooms you entered while hiding money and items that you find while trying to find the exit in order to escape with the briefcase you find. it was a fun way to kill a friendship, much like Mario Kart's battle mode.
