Lucario's reveal doesn't necessarily mean Mewtwo won't be in.

 

Although I don't have much investment for Lucario, he was a character many considered likely to be cut. His inclusion raises my hopes for other endangered characters.

I'm pretty sure Lucario was included due to his importance to Pokemon X and Y.

Not a fan of Lucario. I never felt it even belonged in Brawl honestly. Getting it as a gift pokemon in XY really means nothing in terms of importance. I wondertraded mine away.

While Eevee is indeed popular as of late, I really don't see a way to make it into a fighter. Eevee is too basic of a pokemon to really even be considered honestly. While adding Eeveelutions to the mix would help with moveset possibilites, I don't see them wanting to make a character with 9 forms to switch through.

 

Pichu,

Pikachu, Mewtwo and the starters via Pokemon Trainer are really the only ones I feel should be in anyway, but oh well. Wouldn't be surprised if something like Blaziken is randomly put in.

This game will be much "faster" feeling than brawl, seeing as all characters get buffed up and all.

I wonder if Captain Falcon will return? At first, he seems like a shoe-in. But at the same time, Nintendo acts like they're done with the F-Zero series for the foreseeable future. I think he would make a controversial but logical cut.

Anyone in the original Smash is in. He also has the most iconic move in the series. No way he's getting cut.

He's been in all three so far, and he has the knee.  I can't see them taking him out, even if for some reason they hate making money off of F-Zero.

I worry that people feel the same way about Ness and Lucas, my two mains. Their series is technically dead. I'm just hoping their popularity and past inclusion in Smash will be enough to warrant their return. Although I'm really starting to believe Sakurai wants to cut as few as possible.

 

Funny story about Brawl ...  Apparently, Pichu and Young Link were the only two "planned" cuts. There were plans to bring back Roy and Mewtwo, and others, as well as add several other characters including Dixie Kong and Toon Zelda/Tetra, and it's likely the only reason these characters didn't make it in was time constraints. This kind of reassures me that a strong effort is still being made to include everybody, even if some will eventually be cut for the same reason as before.

@Aevin  There are samples of Pat Cashman (the announcer in Brawl) saying the names of the cut characters.  There are samples of him saying Roy, Mewtwo, and others.
