I've got the last reachable overworld area done, and have gotten started working on Level 9 now.  I actually grabbed another set of dungeon wall tiles from BS Zelda tileset I had lying around so that Level 9 could have its own unique look compared to the other dungeons.  It's a very shiny place.  Here's a few early screenshots:

Tower1_zps02dfb1ae.png  Tower2_zps3abb4c4f.png  Tower3_zpsf51d0e93.png

Two new enemies (and a preview of a third, in statue form) visible in these screenshots.  There will be more than that in the dungeon, though--almost none of the enemies that show up here are ones that appeared in previous areas of the game.

The flames on the outside are like the standard Fire enemy except that they spew fireballs all over the place.  The guys on the far right are intended to resemble the white wizards from Zelda 2, who work pretty much like teleporting Mirror Wizzrobes (but they only take 2 hits from their own reflected magic to kill, rather than somewhere in the range of half a gazillion.)  The Mirror Shield is optional and pretty hard to find, so any room where you're required to kill these guys to proceed will have mirrors in it that you can use to take care of them if you're careful.  In the room shown above, you get the map for beating them... and while useful, it's technically not necessary.  I may put some mirrors in this room anyway, though, just for the sake of people who didn't get the Mirror Shield but would still like to have a map of Level 9. XD

It is possible to have the Red Ring by this point, by the way.  I'm testing it out with the Blue Ring first to make sure I don't go overboard here, since the Red Ring is supposed to be optional (though it is a whole lot easier to find than the Mirror Shield, heh.)  It's also possible to have 16 hearts by the time you get here, if you don't mind only having a max of 7 magic containers.

I'm expecting to see Shiny Enemies I can catch (#badpokemonjokes)

I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes! It's looking amazing so far! And "teleporting wizzrobes" you say? I had that in my recent big quest lol, except your ones seem more fair. Oh well, I'm really getting hyped to playing this now!

Been a while since I've posted anything here -- but I've gotten back to working on this after a looooong period of being distracted by other projects, work, and other assorted stuff.  The "real" way of accessing Level 9 has finally been added in, so now all that's left to do is finish Level 9 and add the intro and ending scenes (and fix any bugs I find along the way, of course -- there've already been a few things I fixed up during my most recent playthrough.)

I've also finally added this onto the site as a "quest project," with a brief description and some screenshots (a few of them new.)  Here's the link to that.

Nice to see this quest being picked up again! Been a while since I've heard from this project, but hey great to hear that the quest is getting close to completion (I assume it is).

Some screenshots of stuff I've been working on recently (still in the testing stages, so things may be slightly different in the final version):

Most dungeon rooms in this quest are the standard NES square shape, though there's a few here and there that drift further away from that.  Most of those that are a little different are just narrower hallway-type rooms... but then there's these.

Needed some new graphics (fluffy white clouds, sky, platforms fading out of view) for this area, but it didn't take too long to come up with some.

And yes, that room with the big rupee has random whirlwinds that come flying in from the side of the screen (only three screens in the entire level have these, though, and only one is actually required to visit if you got the Magic Key earlier... so don't worry too much about the annoyance of being sent back to the start! XD)

This is looking really nice so far.
The sky level is definitely a nice touch. I'm glad to hear you didn't go overboard with the whirlwinds. ;)
Keep up the good work!

Interesting development -- while on my mom's old computer during a visit for my sister's birthday, I found out that the old version of this quest (from back in... something like 2007? not 100% sure on the time-frame, but it's been a while) actually does work when opened in 2.10, rather than being impossible to open as with newer versions (they give an error message about corrupted subscreens and then refuse to open the quest at all.)

Of course, the old version is for the most part way, way worse than what I have currently -- so there's absolutely no chance that I'll be finishing it (heck, I'm closer to finishing the new one anyway... the old version seems to only have the first three or four dungeons completed vs. all but the end of level 9 for the new version.)  But I may make it available at some point just for the sake of comparison between the two versions, or at least post up some screenshots and such.

It's kinda neat to be able to poke around in this old thing again and see similarities and differences between what I came up with back then and what the game's like now.

EDIT: I've posted some stuff comparing new and old versions on my blog, in case anyone might want to see what the older (2007ish) version of the quest (and its tileset!) would have looked like.  More to come in the next few days.
