catfriedrice: The screen probably needs a different palette, the current one doesn't really give a great "winter" feel to it. The screen has a great layout, and you can tell that the right of the screen there lays a town while on the other side is wilderness. The top left of the screen ruins it however, try breaking the tall cliff up somehow, maybe by making it not as high. You also need more detail on the ground, just a little bit more. Try to have more bushes or rocks on the ground.
Jupiter: Its a well designed screen, with two focal points that make it interesting. While the overhang and waterfall look a little awkward, they give a nice feeling to the screen. I don't like this variation of the pallette and prefer your first one. The light greys or the ground and cliffs don't go with the dark blues of the grass. The clouds also distort the palette making it look worse.
Molten Onyx: I really like this screen! It's a great concept and is pulled of well with the help of a well designed screen. I suggest not to use JPG's or a image hosting site that converts them to JPG's though because it distorts the screen and the details.
dragonsword: Eh, it looks good, using good colours and a good basic flowing screen, however it breaks many basic design principles. Mainly placing solid objects on the edges of the screen. You have placed three NPCs, the FSA palm tree to the lower right, and GB palm tree on the bottom, a boulder as well as a cacti right on the edge of the screen, so unless you have solid tiles on those screens the player will walk straight into them and get stuck.
(Slight offtopic: If you use Cset 2,3,4and 9 for the overworld, you can have 60 colours if you use 8bit, which should make it possible for you to cover (almost?) all tMC colours.)
Thanks Sheik! Yeah it's coming along nicely, and I'll look into how I can use all the CSets to maximise the colours with 8-Bit.
Well the problems you have with the actual MC tiles you are just going to have to live with, because I'm doing a MC set, with MC tiles, so take it up with Nintendo not me. To combat that rectangular-ness you mention, I am however trying to make some diagonal tiles so design can be less restricted and a bit more user friendly. Now about the palette, this is my first ever custom palette, and to be honest I don't see what is so bad about it. The grass, in comparison to the default MC grass, is hardly that more bright. They are in a very similar colour range. This palette is similar to the default MC one but is just a little bit more yellow/browny, or a little more 'rich' as I'd like to call it. I don't see how it is any different to some palettes made for DoR that people rave about. On my Macbook monitor it looks great, so maybe it is something to do with that. I don't know. I think the reason so many people have a problem with it is because everyone is so used to seeing all these dark gloomy palettes. Well I think it's time to liven this place up a bit.
As I said before, the tiles won't be changed because of the fact I'm making this an MC set. What bugs you about the palette?
You are right, it is incredibly difficult putting MC tiles into ZC because of pallete limitations. Thanks.
Can you please elaborate on why it's an average screen? I like in depth feedback so I can make it better. What can I do to make it better?
The shade of green for the grass is too bright for my tastes. I absolutely love the tile choices though, and you seem to fit them into the screen well. While the elevations are all parallel and perpendicular, this choice of them seems to get away with it more, and thus not look bad as a result. Would have been a lower rating if I was too blinded by the light green. LOL for song references.
Thanks Nathaniel, that was one of my goals when making the screen, to use parallel and perpendicular angles of the cliffs but to try make a screen that still flows and has purpose. I also tried to take elements out of how MC placed different tiles and layouts (bushes, rocks, water etc).
Jimmyb for three reasons. First, I love the MC tiles (palettes a tad bright but meh) and second, the design is interesting. It's not really something I've seen done with MC. Third, it's the only one that's not depressing...
Thanks! Yeah I'm sick of these dark gloomy shots too!
Good turn out this week guys, lets try get this many shots every week!
