Serebii says this:

A brand new feature of the Pokémon X & Y games are Mega Evolutions. These are special features of Pokémon, different to evolutions and forms, that have your Pokémon Mega Evolve in battle into these appearances. Their abilities, stats and sometimes even types are different. To get a Pokémon to Mega Evolve, they need to be holding a special Mega Stone item unique to their species, as well as receiving the Mega Ring and the Key Stone. To get your Pokémon to Mega Evolve, you can select a button when picking the move and then select a move. The Pokémon will both evolve and attack in that turn. You may only have one Mega Evolution in a battle.

So, it sounds like each pokemon has a specific item that allows them to do it. Blazikenite and Lucarionite are supposedly already confirmed. So we'll probably have Charizardite and Venusaurite, etc. for it too.

Honestly, it seems unneeded still and pretty gamebreaking in a way if you evolve and still attack on the same turn... Most of the pokemon that don't get Mega Evolutions and weren't that great before will be even more at a disadvantage now.

I wonder if the evolutions are limited in battle, as in, whether or not they wear off after a certain amount of turns... Or if the evolution stones are one-time use only?

I imagine they'd be limited to a number of turns, hopefully, or go away if you switch out.

Also, it'd be pretty pointless to have them power up and not be able to attack considering how unbalanced Pokemon can be.  Most pokemon have moves that can basically one-shot you.  And, if the Mega Evolution took a turn, and then Charizard would attack, all I'd think was "You know, I could've just used Fire Blast twice."

I probably won't use them.  I mean, I don't really see the need to do so, even strategically, unless it's a severely underpowered Pokemon like Farfetch'd.  These aren't a Pokedex thing either, so...yeah :x.

If they did require a turn to evolve, then they would be pretty much useless in competitive because everyone would be able switch in a counter to the Megaevolution or set up on the turn the pokemon evolved on for free. While that may not be so bad ingame as most AI are stupid enough to not do it, but it is a terrible thing in competitive where giving your opponent a free turn to do pretty much anything at the wrong time can easily cost you the game. Especially if they were in Gen V's metagame.

So this.

Not sure what to think. Guess it's pretty interesting...but I'll probably have to wait until I have the game to have a opinion.

The starter evolutions at least look okay, but some of the mega evolutions look unnecessary.

Hm, I would appreciate if they would not make new pokemons or evolutions. There are already enough! On the other hand this might make each new pokemon game innovative.

Chespin looks like he ate a lot.  Like, way too much, that fatty.

On the bright side, I really like Fennekin and Froakie's evolutions!  On the dimmer side, I still have to pick one.  I'll have to do a coin flip once I have the game, probably.

I really hope Fekkekin's final evolution is a pure Fire Type.

I'd like Fennekin's to be Fire/Psychic honestly. I always felt Ninetales should've been Fire/Psychic and it never was.

Anyhow, I actually preordered Y at a Target yesterday. The have reservation cards in the Electronics area that cost $1, come with a pin and get you a $5 Target giftcard when you pick the game up. Of course as they didn't secure the pins properly, most people are tearing them off and walking out with them. It's a shame so many people do that. There was like 2 pins left in the store and around 12 cards left.

Forgot to talk about this before.

Something that bothers me about the addition of the fairy type, is that the Steel type is now losing its resistance to Ghost and Dark. Was that really necessary? I mean, steel was a very good type before, but it wasn't really so overpowered that it called for losing resistances.

Now Pokemon like Bronzong, Jirachi, Skarmory and Heatran will lose some viability.

... Mega Garchomp. What, he wasn't overpowered enough already? I can appreciate giving Mega-evolutions to the underdog Pokemon who need a bit of a boost, but this is just getting kinda silly. As for the new Mewtwo, I'm liking it a lot more. It honestly looks like what I'd expect "Mewthree" to look like. But... it's apparently exclusive to X, so I'll never get to play around with it. :(

I'm actually liking the starter's evolutions. Fennekin still looks awesome, Froakie looks much better and cooler, and Chespin... is an armadillo, I guess? Not exactly where I expected that one to go... Still cute and all, but suddenly this has me worried about what his third stage'll look like. On the bright side, Fennekin's evolution apparently learns Psycho Cut, which is more evidence towards him ultimately being a Fire/Psychic type (please GameFreak, please!).

And then dinosaur Pokemon. Yes... all of my approval. Rock/Dragon T. Rex, I want, I want I want I want. And the Diplodocus guy, apparently he can turn normal type moves into ice type. This... has potential.

Lastly, Team Flare's run by five scientists who want to create a beautiful world. So... isn't that taken from the theme song of Death Note? This could go really interesting places. It probably won't, but it could.

I wish they took out Steel type's weakness to Ground types. Maybe because Ground type moves have given me a lot of troubles because so many Pokemon are weak to ground types...or maybe I'm still being scarred by the Earthquake-spamming DPPl generation.
