I hope they do do a GC virtual console though.  You know why?  Who the fuck is going to shell out $200+ dollars for Four Swords Adventures?

I have Four Swords Adventures, and for only $20 too...

Also, if those are USB ports on the dock, they could make the GCN controller adapter work during docked mode. Not that they will, because that thing was criminally-underused on Wii U.

Was that actually used for anything outside of Sm4sh? I can't really remember if it was or not.

AFAIK Nintendo actually had a policy that the GCN adapter could not be used outside of SSB4. It was a Smash-specific peripheral.

This is my understanding as well. I think my friend also had to download third party software to get his to work with his computer. The dongle they give you had 2 USB plugs which I thought was weird, and an utter waste of time and money if they intended on that preventing people from using them with their computers. :P

What's crazy to me, is that after a decade of motion controls, and me bitching about them since 2006 (too lazy/ emberrassed to link to my old posts) I find myself feeling a tad bit sad that they might be gone. Lol.

I'm just really ready to get this system. I'm going to try to wait in line for this one. I've never done that at launch before, and was broke when the Wii, and Wii U launched. Hopefully it's a nice March, that month can be fickle around here.

Wait, is it confirmed that backwards compability is not available? If it's true, holy shit the thing that was making me considering buying this thing is gone. And i sure as hell don't care for the Virtual console, i prefer to have physical copies over digital copies any day.

If this is true, plus if this thing is going to be the sucessor of the 3DS, meaning i have to spend a bunch of more money just to able to play whatever games that would have come for the 3DS sucessor, if that sucessor was an handheld only, because this thing is going to be obviously more expensive than a handheld. i'm pretty much going to skip it. And if this is how every console is going to be from here and on out, guess i'm switching fully to PC and just play their old games.

The console would have to have Wii U hardware to be backwards compatibility (making it more expensive/biggers), plus it would have to have a disc drive to be able to play Wii U games. Plus, the fact that there's no way to play with the Switch tablet and the TV, that makes it almost impossible to port over Wii U games without at least some work. That being said, Nintendo may port over a good amount of Wii U games and have them as cheap. It's unfortunate, but just the way it is.

Wii U disc BC would have been... dumb. Like, really dumb. Like, why-are-you-trying-to-sabotage-your-new-system dumb. For many of the reasons LtM mentioned! And, if Wii U games on Switch would have really been beneficial for the system, maybe they would have helped Wii U? (I mean, some would, but in the form of ports/sequels on Switch). 3DS BC would have been less dumb but if the price/size/etc. benefits from its removal then it's for the best.

Nintendo looves their backwards compatibility. These are the people who made every initial iteration of their portable line backwards compatible with the last, and who used evolutions of the GameCube processor for two generations for perfect BC. You can go out and buy their current portable system right now, stick a game cart from 2004 into it, and play it. As far as I know they had plans for the Super Famicom being backwards compatible. They clearly value the feature. I'm sure they spent a long time looking into some way to incorporate it, and only cut it reluctantly.

(And if it makes anyone feel better Switch is likely the start of a new line of BC systems)

That's what I'm personally most hopeful for. I was bracing myself for lack of backwards compatibility, but if it means what appears to be a more standardized architecture that's easy to keep in line with modern gaming and support retroactively, meaning that all future generations will be that much easier to emulate/do backwards compatibility, then I'm all for it.

Hell. Just look at N64 VC on Wii U. That has lots of problems.

What I really wish Nintendo would do, though, is amp up their virtual console. One of the biggest problems with console launches is the lack of launch titles. How about launching the systems with like 50 available VC games? Heck, VC games at this day in age are basically extra money from nothing for Nintendo. Maybe they could give away like 5 VC titles with the system? You get the system, and bam, you might be able to play Super Mario Sunshine, Super Metroid, and other games right off the bat with no added charge. It's basically nothing off Nintendo's back, but it would make the system that much more enticing for people, I think.

As far as if this will make it easier for future backwards compatibility, it's really hard to say. The Tegra is an ARM-based processor, which is basically the same type of processor you see in mobile phones. What sorta sucks about this is that it'll still be a little work to port games from the XBO and PS4 since they are on the x84/x64 architecture, which are what are in laptop and desktop PCs. It also means that Nintendo backwards compatibility will only be easy in the future as long as they stick with the ARM-architecture (and assuming they do things right). Most likely they will stay with ARM if they stick with this whole tablet mentality.

In all actuality, nowadays backwards compatibility shouldn't be as difficult as the gaming companies make it out to be, especially since the dev-kits should remain fairly consistent in between generations. But, we'll see if Nintendo has finally learned. There is a chance since they probably had to redo their dev-kit from the ground up with this new system.

Yeah, I'm assuming some things. I assume the hybrid (with maybe portable and home specific iterations of it) is the new standard for Nintendo systems and that they're probably permanently done with having two different systems each generation with different libraries. I also assume they've been forward thinking with their Switch design decisions, because I'd hate to think they're adopting a new architecture and a new system paradigm without a vision for how it will play into their future.

I wouldn't be surprised if plans for BC with Switch games in future hardware was a part of Switch's design from the beginning. Just going off Nintendo's love of BC. These all seem like safe assumptions to me, but also it's Nintendo so who even knows

Virtual Console is such a downer on Wii U. I mean, I love my Wii U as much as it is culturally permissible for a woman to love her videogame machine, but geez is its VC support one of the things I may never understand about how the system was handled. Worse selection than the original Wii, worse video. Even with the Wii's storage problem and lack of control customization, it felt like a better, more exciting service there. I prefer to collect older games anyway, so it's not a huge impact on me, but even so...

In terms of physical backwards compatibility Nintendo has only been supporting the previous console and even then they weren't very consistent with it (Gamecube support was dropped from Wii's in 2014 or 2015).

My reaction to the Switch is I don't especially care. I won't be getting it. I don't really see why I would. I have a GameCube that plays melee : p At this point I am holding out for virtual reality, no joke. That or some revolutionary mine craft esque MMO game. Or melee HD ^ _ ^ But I just don't see the hype in a new console if there isn't some killer game for it. And I'm broke.

Sounds like the battery life of this thing's gonna be three hours again like it was with the Wii U gamepad.
