I just hope there's actually stuff to explore and find out there, that isn't mandatory for the main quest, rather than just a bunch of deadspace like Ocarina of Time's Hyrule Field.

I agree with Koh. I've played some games where they try to make the world map bigger only for it to be nothing but bloat. I'm looking at you Tales of Xillia!

Yeah, I'll list myself as cautiously optimistic about it as well. I love the thought of an open world Zelda game... I'm just worried about them not having enough time to fill it with a ton of detail. Say what you will about Skyward Sword, but the ground areas were brimming with detail. There wasn't one place that didn't have a ton of thought behind it. Now, I'm not expecting that much detail here, but I'll be disappointed if there's a small amount of points of interest on the map.
Obviously it's way too early to really tell from this footage, as there's probably another good 6 months of active development at least. Plus, who knows how old this footage is? This could have been recorded a few months ago... maybe more.
In the very least, what makes me excited is that this has so many opportunities for DLC if the amount of stuff in the game feels small in comparison to the land. New dungeons could be excavated, there could be a world in the sky, or just random side quests that can be added in. If Nintendo plays their cards right, even if they aren't able to able as much detail to the overworld that we'd like, the concerns can be addressed at a later date. Then, if our concerns are unfounded, then we can just get more icing on the cake! ![]()

Or we can hack in some icing for an un-iced cake if Nintendo is like 'nope'.

I'm with you. It's hard to be impressed when quite frankly we've had better stuff for years now. I think we are just spoiled by things that are just better than this. It feels as if Nintendo is just now discovering what gamers have been playing for the past ten years. Miyamoto looks far too impressed almost as if he could never imagine such overworld's existing. So Hyrule just turned into Skyrim in this version? Doesn't the size of this overworld feel like Wind Waker but without the water?
I know people are gonna hate me for this, but I'm not really that impressed by this trailer. They just made the world map bigger.Several Western RPGs have done this for a long time. That's nothing new and innovative. The gameplay hasn't really changed that much with the exception of slow motion aiming.

If they wanted to impress me, they should have shown off some nice dungeon gameplay, rather than try catch up with Skyrim. Zelda's dungeons are what sets it apart from everything else.
See I'd agree with you, but Dark Siders II would like a word with you.

The open overworld seems amazing, but I had no problem with how they handled the overworld in previous zelda games
. I'd like to see dungeon gameplay, or other aspects such as story, new mechanics, or anything.

I actually haven't played Darksiders II, so I'll remain in the debatable position where I can very well be corrected.
You really should give it a go, the game is pretty darn impressive and huge, with too much stuff to do! But seriously do give it a try. This is off-topic though...
To be on topic: I imagine the lack of enemies is simply because the game isn't complete and they just wanted to show off the world without distractions (The enemies were likely disabled during most of the recording)

Staying on topic, I wonder if Nintendo would consider a Wii U + Zelda U bundle to boost sales of the console.
Also, I personally think the slowness that occurs while shooting after jumping off Epona doesn't appear realistic, but I believe that was done to make aiming easier while in the air.

There's a lot of comparison to Skyrim here, but here's the thing. Skyrim's (and basically all of Bethesda's other games) combat system is seriously lacking. It might have a huge, open world, but the combat and controls feel super clunky and never grip me. To me, pretty much all the Zelda games have done a great job with smooth combat and control schemes (yes, I do like the DS games' and Skyward Sword's), which does make a huge difference. Another thing, for me, is that Zelda has a much more unique setting. Elder Scrolls stuck to the theme of generic fantasy, i.e. elves, orcs, dragons; but I feel like Zelda's enemies and races are pretty unique (Gorons, Rito, Kikwis), especially lately. And don't get me wrong, Skyrim is a still a good game. But it's never felt quite as exciting as Zelda, to be honest. I feel a lot more excited about exploring an open world Zelda instead.
One thing I liked about the teaser was that Link still wasn't wearing the traditional tunic. I actually really hope that it doesn't appear for a while in the game, or maybe is only optional. There's something refreshing about the idea of wearing something else, much like Wind Waker's 2nd quest. Plus, that hooded scarf is awesome and I want like 20 of them. It adds a lot more mystery to Link's character, which I'm liking. We've had Link as a forest child, a rancher, a train engineer, and a knight in training... but we have no idea about this Link. Personally, I'm hoping for a direct Zelda 1 comparison and he's a complete outsider.

I'm not really seeing the Skyrim resemblance.
It looks more like a mix of Darksiders 2 and Shadow of the Colossus to me. That said, I'm excited for what the game is going to offer.

Now the one thing that could drive me nuts about a vast overworld is the amount of pop-ins in the visuals. At least Nintendo has a good track record of avoiding stuff like this. Boy other open world games were crawling with those.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the mention of DLC, it just doesn't seem like it would work in a game like Zelda; the adventure should be complete from the start, and we shouldn't have to pay to expand the adventure. I mean if they made good DLC and offered it for free... I guess I wouldn't complain. But I don't think it's something the Zelda series needs. Yes, Hyrule Warriors has it, but that's a completely different type of game.
As for how the open world affects the storyline, personally I think it should be like a mixture of Zelda 1 and Majora's Mask: The main story is just dumping you in the world with a basic objective, save the world, but along the way and at your own pace you can stop by several villages and areas to meet people, learn more about them, do sidequests to help them and expand the story that way. I'm curious to see what Nintendo's going for with this, but this idea is one I would love to see.
