Last night I randomly decided to play through Megaman 2 again, mostly to prepare myself for 9 and 10, since the general consensus is that 9 is a lot like 2, and also because I'd probably be more prepared if I was used to playing without slide and charge buster. Did it all legitimately, making it the second game I've done legitimately, next to 3. On Normal, mind you, and I am again of the persuasion that I don't ever feel compelled to play it on Difficult if I already didn't like it on Normal. And I still see a lot of problems with it, in fact new ones cropped up I didn't think about before: Dying to the final boss if you're too low on Bubble Lead to finish him off puts you out of luck, and you have to force yourself to game over in order to recover energy. So instead of potentially finding hidden things to make me like the game more... I just found more things to make me dislike it.
Sigh.
Regardless, I went on to Megaman 9, in an attempt to beat it legitimately without save states. Game is damn hard. Fair hard. For the most part. Not as hard as Megaman and Bass, and infinitely more fair. It's an accomplished feeling to beat this game. And if I'm quite honest... other than a few things that were fairly obvious, I don't see how this game is a lot like 2, personally. It has plenty of unique gimmicks that are actually fun, and feels very unique. The only major resemblances I noted were some enemy usage, and Concrete Man's stage had several resemblances to Wood Man's stage: The first few notes of the song sound similar, they're in similar woodsy areas (but clearly in different states), and there's the part where the same miniboss appears on three straight screens; except this time, the screen design and hazards are changed up and the second enemy has a different pattern, so it feels more unique than Wood Man's at least, even if the idea to recycle an enemy for three straight screens is still kind of meh to me.
But it's a solid game that stands on its own, with a pretty great soundtrack to boot. The main concern I have with this game and 10 is that Megaman can't slide. Note that wording: "Megaman can't slide." Meaning shut up about Protoman, I know he has slide and charge buster even, but it's a terrible excuse for Megaman not having slide. I want Megaman to be able to slide, and I want to be able to do it without taking double damage from everything. It still annoys me, but it isn't a detriment to the game; slide just became a huge staple that it's so baffling they'd remove it. Anyway, other than that, I feel like some required jumps to be made in Jewel Man's stage were a little too cruel, and my biggest one is the inability to leave the Wily stages to go to the shop and buy more E-tanks or lives to help out; you'll have to redo all Wily stages if you leave them during the Wily stages. I know it's an old convention that many of the games had but it's one we could've fixed and done without by now; I mean the shop isn't an NES convention, so why is it there? (That's not a complaint, I love the shop.)
I think the biggest problem I ended up having is a continuous problem from 7 onwards. Yep, you know what it is by now: The robot master rematches and the Wily fights are on the same stage. And oddly I had more trouble with the robot masters than Wily. Tornado Man had good and bad fights, Concrete Man gave trouble, occasionally Plug Man was mean, little mistakes piled up and didn't give me many chances against the Wily bosses. The machine wasn't bad, and the Capsule I managed to first-try due to Hornet Chaser, E-tanks, and M-tank, so in the end it just boiled down to a combination of annoying fights and probably my own skill level, but by the end I just kinda stopped having fun.
But I powered through, and it's still quite a good game. Definitely in the top five. And also now my third Megaman done legitimately. Onwards to 10... tomorrow.

So I just beat Mega Man 3 and I got to say, it's easily my favourite out of the first 3. Pretty well made, and I had quite a lot of fun with it.
The only thing I can say however is that the difficulty is INSANE. Especially the MM2 boss rematches, I had plenty of fun with those. Yellow Devil revisited wasn't too bad and I actually swept through that. I needed savestates for the battle before the final boss since... how are you supposed to avoid all that shit? As far as level design goes, I didn't see anything too bad or crazy compared to 2 and 1 and I thought most of the stages were done pretty well.
Did I also mention I love Magnet Man's theme? Yeah I probably did, but I can't help it, it's an epic song and should be loved by everyone. In addition to that, the soundtrack was superb. I really love most of the songs and hell I'm using them in my ZC quests lol.
All in all, great game, superior to the other two.
Right now:
3 > 2 > 1

I think the trick in the final boss is to kill it quickly. You can do that by top-spinning it in the head.

I actually used the Snake weapon XD
Also, I just realised I mentioned the wrong boss, I was actually talking about the one before with the two pencils or something. That's the one I had real problems with. My bad lol.

Rush Jet cheeses the Wily Machine's second form pretty easy. Not as easy as one-shotting Gamma though...

And tonight I played and beat Megaman 10.
I feel like Thunder Wool runs out of energy too quickly, and I hate how Pump Man's Water Shield can absorb the shots, making it difficult to use. I think Blade Man deals just a little too much damage on you, especially at his rate of fire. I also really hate the enemies that jump out of pits, I know they're a staple to a degree, but in this one they seemed a little less consistent, though I suppose most of it was my fault.
Now that I got literally the only negatives I have about the game out of the way, I... This is the best Megaman game. It's fresh from beginning to end, inventive, fun, just the right amount of challenging, and has some pretty cool and unique weapons. I also enjoy how some bosses require using the weapons strategically against them, rather than just a boring direct hit. Some of the stage design was a little frustrating at times, but what Megaman game isn't? This game... I just can't find very many significant flaws in it, honestly the ones I listed are extremely minor. I'm so impressed at what 10 did and added while having so little to complain about. It was just so fun and well-balanced and well-crafted... Man. I had the most fun with this game like I wouldn't believe. It came out of nowhere and... wow.
New favorite Megaman game.
I guess that concludes my romp through the classic series, though I intend to go back to 4-6 in order to beat them legitimately as well. And also play the 8-bit version of Megaman 8, which may or may not be very enjoyable. Either way, now that that's done, if I had to make a ranking list of my favorite Megaman games in order, it would probably look like this:
10>3>6>4>9>1>7>Bass>2>5>8
Now to do the X series?! ... maybe. The X series doesn't hit the same sweet spot the classic series does for me. It's something that I might tackle, though I lack the means to play X7 and X8. Yes, I know, people hate X7, and X8 doesn't have too many fans even though I do hear a few saying it's actually good, but I'd play them anyway. If I went through the series. Which to be honest, I'm not feeling it. I might just play Battle Network and Zero Collection instead.

Zero collection is awesome, right on part with Mega Man X 1-3. Honestly, don't play past X3, you'll only be disappointed. Those three games, imo, are the best of that series. As for the Zero series, the first is a bit shaky, but the next three are kick ass. Zero 4 gets a lot of flak for simplifying the gameplay, but I absolutely adored the bosses, they were far more inventive and fun to fight than most of the bosses in the three games previous!

I personally don't care much for the Mega Man Zero series (although to be quite honest, I have yet to try it.) The grading system from MMX5 to (I think) MMX8 comes back, which is a big let down for me...
The ZX series on the other hand... now that's more like it! The grading system from the Zero series is gone, and exploration is encouraged.
...I've never played the ZX series either. (feels a bit disappointed)

I don't recall much, if any, need for grinding in X8. Sure there is the Sigma Blade which is extremely Op and justifiably requires a ton of farming currency to acquire (Because dude, it's Op!), but it is 100% optional and not at all required or needed to beat the game on the hardest difficulty. The PS2 version also features an easily exploitable bug that gives you maximum currency, this bug was fixed in the PC port (Unsure about other ports). The exploit is why I recommend the PS2 version because it gives you the opportunity to get the Sigma Blade if you really, really want it, while avoiding the grind.I personally don't care much for the Mega Man Zero series (although to be quite honest, I have yet to try it.) The grading system from MMX5 to (I think) MMX8 comes back, which is a big let down for me...
The bug enhances replayability of the game a little bit without diminishing the overall experience at all (You're choice to exploit the bug or not).

I beat Rockman 4 Minus Infinity yesterday. If you haven't played that, then you're missing out big-time. It's what an NES Mega Man game wants to be when it grows up. http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/910/

Just beat Megaman 2 and it's still no doubt the best of the classic series.
I'll probably play 3 again sometime soon though I remember it being really bad

I don't find 3 to be that bad at all. I had more fun with 3 than 2 and 1. Sure, 3 might've been a lot harder and a bit more unfair in some places, but 3 just felt better imo. But ya know, opinions are opinions ![]()

Either way, I feel like Five and Six are better than both, and Four really should be better, bit is marred by some questionable design choices in a few places. In terms of atmosphere, I find them to actually be better than the first three, unlike a lot of people here. The snowy theme behind Dr. Cossack's Fortress is really cool, for example, and some of the stages in Five and Six are really cool. And Mr. X's castle, stage 1, is probably the most atmospheric moment in the NES series. The combination of the music, the background, the stage itself... I dunno, it felt magical, in a way I can't really describe that well.
Anyways, enough of my rambling. I started Megaman and Bass, but can't say I really care for it that much. The bosses have good ideas, but a lack of telegraphing their attacks makes them luck based a lot of the time, which I find to be pretty terrible. The stages themselves... they're alright, I suppose, but there are some really questionable areas in a couple of them that I find to be pretty aggravating. Maybe I'll finish it, I dunno. I'm also playing Rosenkreuzstilette, which is a Megaman game in everything but name (literally, the phsyics, engine, 8 bosses, everything are ripped straight from the series), and I'm really enjoying it so far. Some of the stages are maybe a bit on the easy side, but the quick laser stage was beautifully put together. Seriously, if you like Megaman, go play it.
