Well, I just got this game today, (because I'm British, European release date was November 4th) and since I came back from school, playing it is basically all I've been doing. Seriously, the only other things I've done is my (in this case, slightly-less-than-) usual browsing the internet and watching a roughly 20 minute long video. (No prizes for guessing what it is.) So far I've beat up to Sky Sanctuary, and done the challenges for Green Hill and Chemical Plant, as well as beat Metal Sonic. I haven't been trying to get all S-Ranks so far, or all Red Rings, (I have been trying to get a good amount, just not all) I'll probably leave that for later. But anyway, judging by what I've played so far, I have to say, this is easily one of the best Sonic games for me. I'm not sure if it's better than SA2, but, IMO, it definitely has a chance.

My only problems with it so far is that, at first, I was getting some atrocious lag (well, not really lag, more that the graphics couldn't keep up) and I still do in cutscenes. And that for some reason, in the skill shop, you need to wait like two minutes before you can actually do anything. (And that's also between button presses. If I press down, and it works, I need to wait another two minutes before pressing A will work.)

Which version? PC? Console? I've never had that issue...

I did have a few framerate issues with the Vector mission, but I beat it with an S-rank on my... sixth try I think. Just gotta be quick, stay somewhat close to the stage, and homing attack fast. It's a bit hectic, but not all that bad.

I have the PC version. I updated my drivers, so the graphics issue is only really a problem in cutscenes now, and not even as much as it was before. My computer only actually has on-board graphics, I should probably get an actual graphics card sometime soon, maybe for Christmas. However, the skill shop issue, I have acutally found out that, if I just keep mashing the button enough, it does eventually work. I assume it's just a bug in the PC version, or it might be that it's coded in such a way that it often doesn't register the commands from my controller, but I doubt that.

Speaking of my controller, the control scheme works surprisingly well for me, considering the messed up button layout for my controller. It's basically just a PS3 controller, but the buttons don't correspond to what you think they would. What would be B on an Xbox controller is Y, what would be Y is X, and would-be X is B. In addition to that, RT is RB and RB is LB, which confused me a great deal when I first tried to sidestep.

That is odd... Dunno if it's a problem with the game itself but I'm not a tech guy so I won't attempt to look into it; I'll just get lost. lol

I could never get used to that. Sometimes the slight adjustments between Unleashed and Generations kills me. This would just destroy me utterly. icon_heh.gif

It really wasn't that hard if you just keep a fairly close distance and homing attack like mad, except for the ones that lob high; go back, wait for them to lower, then hit them. Then get back to that close spot again and keep going until it's done.

Well, I've gotten all red rings, S-ranks, and S-ranked challenges up through Crisis City now. That just leaves Rooftop Run (which I managed to get all red rings as modern Sonic earlier) and Planet Wisp. I've also gotten all bosses and rival battles beaten at S-rank as well as on hard mode. Guess this means I'm close to 100% completion; all that's left is the best rank on the final boss after that...

I done a quick Google search, apparently, it is a known bug with the PC version that SEGA are trying to fix, so hopefully there'll be a patch soon. As for the controller, it kind of helps that this is actually the first time I've played a Modern Sonic game with a controller other than a Wii Remote.

And another thing....You know the Zone I hate in this game so much is "planet wisp"
Its so long and i hate the spike power up for classic sonic..Modern sonic Is not so bad except the
Rocket power up is annoying.

And this is why Sonic Colors sucks. icon_razz.gif No, actually, I feel like reviewing both those stages (just beat them last night, still have yet to beat the game though).

Classic Planet Wisp. On the one hand, it feels kind of like what Colors tried to do in the 2D sections. It's got better platforming, tighter controls, a spike powerup that actually responds to input. On the other hand, that spike wisp is still the worst gimmick they've ever done in the series. Give me a sword over it any day. It was decent, but the reliance on spikes still got a little annoying.

And then we have Modern Planet Wisp. When people ask me why I hate Sonic Colors, I'll point to this stage and say "It promised me this." It fixed almost every complaint I had with Colors, really. Well implemented wisps, clever stages, a focus on speed and quick platforming rather than slow exploration and broken platforming, and for added bonus, we get to explore a section of Planet Wisp outside of Eggman's construction site. So even if it doesn't stack up to the other stages in Generations as well, I love the level simply because it shows what Colors could have been, had Sega actually tried.

*Looks at Generations' overworld hub thing* Looks like Sega's lagging a bit behind the fanbase. icon_razz.gif

It just reminded me a whole lot of a certain epic Sonic 1 hack. icon_razz.gif

Saw that in chat. It looks pretty neat, but who's to say it wasn't an old idea to have a hub world like that? Sega just made their own version of it for the game, with its own little tweaks and stuff. Still, that's pretty neat.

Ah, I see. Yeah, they should have tested it more first... but at least they're fixing it. And good to hear about the modern Sonic controls. Just be careful if you go back to play Unleashed. icon_deformed.gif

I got all the challenges up through Rooftop Run done and S-ranked now. As well as red rings. That just leaves challenges and red rings in Planet Wisp. Which leads us to this...

I thought it wasn't very fitting for a last level; this is why they should have used Asteroid Coaster. But Planet Wisp was a good stage. In Generations at least. Much better than it was in Colors. I think some of the difficulty (mostly in Classic) could have been tweaked a bit (THOSE STUPID ROCKETS ARE TOO ACCURATE), and the reliance on the Spike Wisp annoyed me (but still better than the sword), but I will say this: If you don't like Planet Wisp, don't go play Colors. Trust me.

Pretty much my thoughts except for the sword thing. Mostly because the sword was unresponsive for me.

He has it pretty much covered; all the bases were handled in the modern version, though I thought maybe there was a little too much rocket Wisp. But yes, Colors pales in comparison to its Generations representation.

The best final boss is still the Finalhazard though. icon_deformed.gif

Yeah, I just found it interesting that fans had the same idea about a year prior. It's still a bit of a cliché I suppose but I like to think Sega saw that hack (it did make some waves in the Sonic hacking community IIRC) and used it as inspiration for Generations' hub world. Just an idea though. Also:

That random shortcut. icon_razz.gif Maybe Sega still has some of the old Sonic spirit in them. Oddly enough, while the video happens to be poking fun of people who Let's Play games as soon as they're released, I haven't seen a lot of Sonic Generations LPs...

Also DAMNIT YOU GOT ME OBSESSED WITH THIS GAME NOW I MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE TO BUY IT!

Goddammit. It seems this game has suddenly developed a problem with my controller. Sometimes, it think I'm pressing LB when I'm not. The problem seems to go on and off, but the points where it's on is oddly consistent. It has made the game unplayable, as I can't beat Modern Speed Highway now.

Yikes. Is it a problem with the game or the controller? Is there an option to use the keyboard instead of a joypad? If so, you could always use Joy2Key to configure a new layout and try with that. The program's slightly confusing and the controls might be slightly less smooth but if it fixes your problems, it might be worth it. That or see if you have a driver that needs updating.

Side note update: I'm up through Planet Wisp, S-ranked both stages, all red rings, and S-ranked all modern challenges. Just four classic challenges left to complete and S-rank. Then all that's left is to S-rank the final boss on normal and hard mode. So close I can almost taste it...

I assume it's the controller, but considering how consistent it is in when it starts acting up, it might be the game. Or the combination of both. It is possible to use keyboard (would kinda be a jerk-move if it wasn't) but I'd really rather use controller. I'll try Joy2Key to see if it works.
