I wasn't a fan of 4kids enforcing censorship which could completely change the story of the original Japanese version. I'm looking at you Yu-gi-oh. It took me 2 years after watching the dub series to find out what was missing from the original version. And boy, the plot in that series was WAY different than the 4kids version. For example, there's no "Shadow Realm" in the original version. People actually died in the original.

The only thing missing was the guns. Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters wasn't exactly good in its original subbed version. Season zero, on the other hand... season zero was good.

Edit: Um... people died in the manga, but I thought there was still a shadow realm in the subbed anime?

Not like I care. Pretty much anything from Shonen Jump (aside from Hakusho, Shaman King, Bakuman and Rurouni Kenshin) will pale in comparison to just about any other anime ever.

Well, as LtM pointed out, an anime is an anime whether subbed or dubbed. You pretty much proved how I'm definitely not qualified to be a weeaboo. :D (take that NoeL! :P) The primary reasons why I don't like subs is one, I don't want to learn Japanese and two, I want to watch the anime, not stare at the bottom reading text.

The primary reasons why I don't like subs is one, I don't want to learn Japanese and two, I want to watch the anime, not stare at the bottom reading text.

For the second reason, I get your concerns, but they're honestly ill-placed. :P I remember when I first started watching anime, I felt the same way.  One of the first series I watched was Fullmetal Alchemist, and its dub was pretty good.  So I thought "Why watch anime subbed?  It seems really inconvenient and annoying.  These dubs aren't that bad." Then I hit some series where I was forced to watch it subbed.

Lo and behold, it's actually not as bad as you think.  Sure, I'll admit it can be a bit hard first starting out, but you really get adjusted to it quickly.  Just watch a couple series subbed, and you'll be used to it.  Now I can easily read subs and watch what's actually happening, be it on a small monitor or big TV.  And, because of that, I've been able to watch series well before they get dubbed and watch some series that flat out won't ever be dubbed.

It also lets me use Crunchyroll, which is the cheapest, legal way to watch anime. :P (Also, another reason why I dislike Funimation is they typically don't put their older series on Crunchyroll)

I haven't tried Crunchyroll yet. I've been hearing good things about it. Yeah, I would probably want to watch an anime subbed if there is not dub option. One example would be Devil Survivor 2 The Animation because I know that anime would never get a dubbed version because of how poorly the game its based on sold in North America.

First: if you think that watching subs will result in you learning Japanese, you're most DEFINITELY on the path to being a weaboo, because that sort of thinking, from an inverted perspective, is rather naive and signature of weaboos.

Second: The only reason subtitles would result in you staring at the bottom of the screen the entire episode is if you're an insanely slow reader with no command over your peripheral vision. If it was all just staring at the bottom of the screen, nobody would bother watching subbed anime. It would be idiotic. Subs are something you get good at. It's mind-boggling how often this argument comes up despite how completely bunk it is.

Third: If you think anime is anime regardless if subbed or dubbed, then you obviously undervalue the role voice actors play in making a story come to life. "Oh, these VA's don't completely suck, so it's good enough." They're not equivalent. You're inarguably settling for less.

I'm not saying you should watch subs instead of dubs, but if you must watch dubs, I advise re-thinking the matter and finding better reasons. Because these reasons are all quite thoroughly terrible.

So in other words, you're saying I'm a dummy for preferring dubs over subs? :-/ Not that it matters because I rather be that over a weeaboo any day. And I don't want to debate this any further because it's clear you do not like dubs and you're basically choking me for valid points on why I prefer dubs.

Anyway, back on topic:

I watched more episodes of Steins;Gate. It's getting pretty intense so far. I'm not a sci-fi fan myself, but this show is definitely appealing to me a lot. I wish there were more animes like this.

They're not valid points, and you'd understand that if you actually read my post, which clearly you didn't, given all the assumptions you made in your synopsis just now.

But whatever. I'm out. This discussion is going nowhere except down the toilet.

[Edited because my original choice of words was heat-of-the-moment and far more rude than was necessary.]

weeaboo

You keep using that word, but I don't think you know what it means. It doesn't mean "anyone that watches and prefers subbed anime." It's honestly a bit insulting that you think that's what it means since I am definitely not a weeaboo. I don't worship Japan. I mean, I don't hate Japan. But I don't worship it. It has flaws like any other place.

So I'd really appreciate it if you'd stop calling people in this thread that just because they prefer to watch subbed anime. Thanks!

Also, just to be clear so this argument can end (at least for this thread) and we can get back to talking about what anime we are watching: people are free to prefer dubs over subs. They are not stupid for liking things that way. I fully understand why people prefer that. They don't have to have justifiable reasons for that, even. But at the same time, people are free to prefer subs over dubs. They are not "weeaboos" because of that. They also don't need to justify themselves for what preference they have.

If, for whatever reason, you all want to continue that argument, take it to another thread.

What can you guys tell me about FLCL? I got it really really cheap off of Amazon. I only read the first part of the manga. (I got the manga as a gift) I thought it was pretty cool...yet weird at the same time. Only 6 episodes, I think I'll be able to watch the series in one sitting. (I'll treat it as if it were a movie)

Imagine Gurren Lagann on somehow even stronger drugs. That's basically the whole thing.

FLCL is one of the best animes E-V-E-R. In my opinion, of course. Up there with Cowboy Bebop, Mushishi and Evangelion, among two or three more.

Six episodes of the finest humor, action (surface), and a somehow deep reading on adolescence issues (beneath), everything with a superb animation and a very good drawing that often seems closer to a manga style than an anime one. Oh, and you'll be blown away by the amazing songs that sound here and there during the episodes (like a "Best of The Pillows" compilation, you'll surely enjoy it).

It's just the best Gainax gone wild and free like never before, but maintaining the subtlety and purely fun from beginning to end.

Never plane and never boring, FLCL is one of the best animes you can watch, period.

Well, well, looks like I missed out on some jazz.

But uh, hey! I like both dubs and subs. I mean, sure, if I can watch in english, then I'll go for it.

Buuuuuut, I like fansubs. Because I am sooooo not a patient person. >_>

I completed the first Blu-ray set for Steins;Gate. I don't like sci-fi themed animes, but this one is a clear exception. I'm loving the plot so far. I mean, it has everything I wanted in an anime (minus the fanservice obviously :P). The characters, the artstyle and even the dubbed voices are perfect IMO (yes now I got used to J Michael Tatum's Okabe voice). Big thanks to The Satellite and SpacemanDan for recommending this anime! :) Yes Russ....TS still wins! :P
