Personally, I don't like speed running the classic stages. I always felt that, yes, you can go through them fast, but it's better to just take your time and look around. Modern stages, however, are more fun to try to race through for some reason.

Anyways, I got the game, and so far, it's living up to expectations. I've completed Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Sky Sanctuary (both acts), and so far, in the classic levels, they've recreated a Genesis-style environment perfectly. And the modern levels? Best design I've seen in years; the multiple ways to get through the levels so far has been dizzying. I still kinda wish for tighter controls, since some areas seem to be set up Adventure 2-style and therefore aren't that well-suited to it, but so far, it was worth the wait and worth the money. icon_thumbsup.gif

Yeah, just like Sonic, I can't take it slow. I already beat all the main stages, both acts, and unlocked the final boss stage. Haven't played it yet, though. Went back to find some red rings and tackle some challenges. But I gotta say, I haven't enjoyed a Sonic game this much since... hell, Adventure 2. I'll say it. Sonic Generations is the best Sonic game since Adventure 2. The main levels themselves are fantastic, then you get ten challenges per level (five Classic Sonic, five Modern) that extends the replayability. And the red rings aren't as frustrating to find as they were in Colors. So far, this game has lived up to expectations and surpassed them.

I think I might take my time till I play the final boss, though. Might just go and do a bunch of challenges. Never know though; I might cave. icon_heh.gif

So I'm having a big issue with this game. When I played Unleashed, I spent weeks S ranking every single stage. And the urge to S rank carried over, to the point where I restart the stage if I make so much as a single screw up. I think I restarted Classic Sky Sanctuary 10 times before I beat it (with an S rank and three red rings), and modern... after ten minutes of playing it and only seeing the first twenty seconds of the stage, I stopped for the night.

Overall, I really like the game. But I do have a big complaint. Unleashed had very nice pacing. It was packed with story, it had Hub Worlds to explore, side missions to do, entrance stages to navigate, etc. But Generations seems to pick you up from one level and hurl you headfirst into the next. Even when I want to head over and customize my abilities, it keeps nagging me to play the last act I haven't finished. Gets a bit annoying.

But that said, the fact that they brought back Secret Rings style customization makes me incredibly excited. The first two abilities I bought were a overall speed increaser, and an ability that keeps you from losing momentum when running up hill. I like fast. Cuz S rank OCD.

The Hub World is pretty cool, I'll give it that. Especially the way the music changes as you go through it, or switch between Sonics. I love that effect. But I miss Unleashed style Hub Worlds and Entrance Stages. Why couldn't the main Hub World lead to each area's Hub, or at the very least an entrance stage? I loved exploring those. Oh well.

Overall, it's too early to say, but despite all the cool features in Generations, I think I like Unleashed better. Then again, I've only played 2 and 1/30 Modern stages, so I probably don't have enough to base a review on.

And on one final note, chemical plant. The rising water area, with the moving platforms. Part of me died when I saw that and realized I was reliving the same nightmare from Sonic 2. And then Tails' comment about it cracked me up. icon_razz.gif

Beaten the final boss, and I did find it easy (beat it the second time), but all it took was a little reminding that final bosses in 3D Sonic games are usually easy anyway (exception: Dark Gaia) to make me realize that it's no big deal. More verbose thoughts below, hidden for your convenience:
Spoiler
Anyways, as far as the game itself, I'm gonna give it sometime before I slap down a true rating on it. Play some more challenges, replay the levels and collect red rings, that sorta thing. But I'm impressed at the extras that keep the game's length going even after you complete it; if you're OCD, you'll want to S-rank all the challenges and collect every single collectible. I know I do, particularly the music to see what's there to listen to and replace in the main levels. Emerald Hill Zone is now the main theme of classic Green Hill, for example.

And skills customization... like Secret Rings', but better. Only, I'm hoping there's a way to expand the skill points so you can equip more items per set... The one thing I don't like about that kind of customization is getting used to the altered controls from one set only to switch to another and have a few problems with it; I don't want to have multiple sets to switch between for all those handy skills, and I definitely don't want to take off my boost meter increase. icon_heh.gif

So... Generations has taken every expectation of mine, met it, and surpassed it in ways I never dreamed of. Except the final boss, and in some ways, the story. The story was practically nonexistent, and I really thought it could have done more to expand upon each era and important event in Sonic's history and reference them more. There were a few good references made, but... not enough. And some parts of the story left holes (that I won't spoil) that should have been filled. Or maybe the next Sonic game will fill them, particularly this:
Spoiler
However, I've practically forgiven the writers for their atrocities committed in Colors, as the script was funny, instead of laughable. Heck, I think I laughed more here than I did in the actual funny parts of Colors ("Now I remember why we changed his voice chip," for example of a funny Colors scene). Or in any Sonic game. So well done there, at least.

Overall, I still stand by it being the best since Adventure 2. I'll come up with some kind of "review" and a rating once I play it a bit more though; don't want it to be blindsided with just my first impressions. icon_heh.gif

I seen this at Walmart today. Too bad it's not for a system I own. icon_frown.gif Kinda wish it was for Wii too, but it'd be watered down I'm sure, at least the graphics to a point, but I'll just have to be patient for the 3DS version to release, and then sometime shortly after that releases, I will have to pick it up. icon_biggrin.gif

If I were you, I'd just grab the Steam version, which comes out in a few days (if your computer can run it). I haven't played the 3DS one (partially cuz it ain't out yet), but it doesn't actually look that good, especially compared to the console/Steam version.

Also, for those of you with the game. Metal Sonic. Hard Mode. Sonic Boom. Greatest. Thing. Ever. That is all.

I haven't yet. I've cleared every stage up through City Escape including bonus stages, all red rings, all S-ranked. I'm going in order, so I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm tempted to skip ahead and try it now though, just to see what it's about.
