Surprised work wasn't as hellish as I thought it would be. Some worthless girl that never showed up more than 25% of the time finally quit. It's a wonder she didn't get fired behind literally showing up whenever she felt like it. I would probably be fired before it even got close to a habit. Like the third time I called off in the same week, I bet I would be either fired or at least on very thin ice. Like I said, the girl almost never showed up for work and only had 4 hour shifts doing piss easy work (being a cashier) and only had to work like 4-5 days a week at 4 hours a day.
I get so peeved when these young kids get jobs where I work and before they're even clocked in, they're complaining about "being tired". For some reason, it's usually the males that do that kind of whining. Do they have ANY idea what I go through on a daily basis? Most of the days that I work Monday through Thursday I work nine hours. NINE hours of pushing a large number of shopping carts at a time in extreme heat and cold, taking out trash, doing heavy lifting, helping customers load their cars, helping customers find items and much more, frequently having to do things that I shouldn't have to (i.e I'm expected to spot mop Produce despite there being 5 people working back there). Do you see me whining about it? HELL NO. It kills me when someone that has it easy whines about it being "too hard".
Most of the cashiers couldn't handle my position at all. Half of them can't even handle more than 3 large carts or 5-6 small carts at a time. And when it's busy, especially around holidays, you gotta be able to bring up several carts at a time. My personal best is 9 large carts by hand, but it's difficult to steer, so I usually just do 5-6 at a time. I can grab and back them into other carts up to five at a time. As for the little ones, the most I've ever done in one shot was 13 of them, as I never had a chance to attempt more than that. The older guy that does my job can bring up even more than I can (he's been doing that for 25 years and counting), although he tends to play around and goof off. Still, where he may lack in intelligence he sure as hell makes up for it by his sheer strength.
So in summary, I can't bring up quite as many carts in one trip as the older guy, but I park them back up front much faster and more efficiently than he does. Then again, I'm really big on efficiency anyway; I try to calculate how many of each cart to grab to minimize the number of trips to each cart corral. My goal is to get them all within two trips, although when it's really busy or if I'm just coming back from lunch, three trips may be necessary. My technique is to get 5-6 large carts and lift up the back of one of the small carts so I can pull 2 small ones behind me with my left hand while steering the 5-6 large carts with my right hand. Alternatively, I may do the same with 2 large carts with up to 10-12 small carts. I have it down to a science now after a year and a half of cart pushing. To think 6 large carts used to be near impossible for me to budge when I started and now I can push them like they're nothing. Impressive to see how much strength I've built up. That and when I began, I lasted an hour before my feet killed me. Now, I can make it all day, although the shoes are off the moment I get in the door.
