I don't like subbed anime. You can now disqualify me from being a weeaboo.

So yay, I'm not the only one. I can't stand watching anything subbed unless I absolutely have to. I hate having to have my eyes glued to the bottom of the screen the whole time. Doesn't really effect me that often since I very rarely watch on anime, but when the occasionally one comes around that I'm actually interested in (here's looking at you, Attack on Titan), waiting for the dubs sucks.

I don't mind dubs for the most part.  Honestly, if a dub is good, I prefer it.  I really enjoy the Disney dubs of the Miyazaki movies, for example.  I also like the Dragonball dubs better than the subs as a big example.  And there's various other series where the dubs are really good.  Baccano is another one that comes to mind.

It's just that I do think the majority of dubs aren't that good. :-/ Some of the really big titles do get a good amount of effort and money into the dubbings, but a lot of others have really annoying, unemotional, or unfitting voices.  There's some series that simply don't have dubs.  Plus, after all this time, I've watched most older series that I really want.  So if I watch a series, it's usually when it's coming out, so subbed it the only option.

And here I am watching Non Non Biyori without any subs at all.

Yay four full years of studying Japanese in high school

I think it's because people don't look at the right place to find the best dubs. Funimation is probably the king of dubs. They do dubbing right.

Uh... you don't have much of an option most of the time. :P I look for series, not for stuff done by dubbing companies.

I actually agree with you about Funimation I've always liked their dubs since they are pretty good. :P

Fixed.

Seriously, I can't remember ever seeing a funimation dub that didn't suck. Well, Baka and Test was okay. But aside from that, their dubs tend to be awful. I'm seriously dreading the dub of Attack on Titan (which should be an easy series to dub, making it that much more terrifying that they'll probably fuck it up).

In short: Funimation is the reason I became the sub/dub equivalent of a vegetarian.

I'm looking forward to the dub of Attack on Titan though I'll watch it whenever I get finished watch the subbed version. Since shows like this is always better with the subs.

I spoke in person to Monica Rial (voice actress of Tsubaki in the Soul Eater dub) and she outright explained that there's never going to be a good dub.

The teams are so slim. All script editors also have to voice act. All voice actors have to edit scripts. Recording voices over pre-timed animations is tedious. It's such a niche market that it's impossible to find good voice actors, meaning that all dubs work with essentially the same pool. It's not that people don't know how to do a good dub. It's that a good dub is pretty much impossible. It's a fact.

Don't play with my quotes Fabbrizio. That was kinda uncalled for. :(

Aniplex is also a great dubber. Are they supposed to be a rival or sibling company for Funimation?

I didn't realize playing with quotes was anything to feel hurt about. Anything contained within a post is there to express an intent, quotes included. People have been modifying each other's quotes on this board since the dawn of time and this is the first time I've seen anyone hurt by it.

I never had anyone manipulate with my quotes before. Yeah, surprised? :P

Given your reaction, I'm not surprised. Your reaction was what surprised me. I simply don't want you to take any offense from it - I mean no harm. It's merely to illustrate a point. "Had I sad this, these are the words I would have used." generally in a contrary or otherwise joking manner. In this case, I did put a bit too much emotion behind the "gah all dubs are fucking horrible and no true scottsman would watch one" so I can see how the situation might have gotten a bit weird. But I assure you I had no malicious intent. I just hate dubs, with exception given to Cowboy Bebop, Afro Samurai and anything dubbed by Geneon.

If you're looking at the most horrible dubs, 4kids is probably the most notorious to produce pretty bad dubs. And then you got the newer seasons of Pokemon. How can they screw up on dubbing voices like that?

Funimation is worse than 4kids. At least 4kids gets creative with it. If you're going to bastardize a concept, at least put some fun into the process. The acting in FUNi dubs is completely wooden.
