Still playing Legacy of Darkness, but I finished both Cornell and Henry's stories. Cornell's ending was pretty interesting, setting up the plots for the other two primary characters fairly well. Henry's scenario was actually rather fascinating, and had an idea I really liked and want to experiment with myself.

The idea is that you're replaying most of the levels you had played as Cornell already, but all the puzzles have already been finished, and all the doors are already unlocked. You're on a timed mission to rescue a group of children, one per level. However, the neat thing is that each kid saved directly corresponds to unlocking something, giving you a pretty good incentive, considering unlocked content includes Hard Mode, the second half of the game entirely (two remaining scenarios), and alternate costumes for the three other characters.

The only thing I didn't like was the concept to Henry's character. Cornell was a werewolf who could temporarily break the seal on his powers and use them on his enemies. Reinhardt was the next Belmont, a family cursed to battle Dracula every generation, and wielded the legendary "Vampire Killer" whip. Carrie was a witch whose family had been killed out of fear from their powers. Henry is just some guy who grabbed an old suit of armor, and happened to think ahead enough to grab a revolver before heading out. Call me crazy, but it seems the standards for entering Dracula's castle aren't quite as lofty as I thought.

-- ANTI-DOUBLE POST EDIT --

Finally finished Reinhardt's scenario and decided to start Carrie's so I could see her first level before going to be. Holy crap, why didn't I pick her for my Hard Mode run?! Reinhardt had a whip and sword. Carrie gets powerful, charge-able homing shots with unbelievable range, and they automatically hit as many enemies as they can before dissipating, so one shot usually damages three or four enemies. Not only all that, but unlike Reinhardt, she can move while attacking, while he had to stop moving to hit stuff. This is the only character that I managed to kill the first boss with without getting hit. Why is it that in these games, the most overpowered characters are little girls?

Well, I wanted to start playing another story-based game. So I started playing through Xenogears. I've always LOVED the combat system and soundtrack, but never really got far enough in to make a solid opinion of the story. Since I'm not getting the new consoles, I figured I should have the time to devote to finishing this one.

Still playing Wind Waker HD (should be done this week), Pokemon Y, and am planning on picking up Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut on the WiiU this week as well.

Finally picked up Soulcalibur V seriously in the last couple of days and beat the story mode. And I'm pretty disappointed by it. I kinda wish they'd instead given us the open-ended stories through arcade mode like they have in the past, then do something like Weapon Master mode in Soulcalibur II. I also kinda get the feeling that the computer is a cheating bastard in this one, and they've done just enough tweaks to the battle system that you can easily screw up what you were trying to do, and then get screwed because of it. The computer AI is never consistent; sometimes it'll be open and fairly easy to attack, other times it will wreck you hard. Can't say I'm too fond of this entry, though the character creation is neat. The idea behind story mode isn't bad either, it just... needed to be fleshed out a lot more. Otherwise... it's okay, I guess.

Picked up Deus Ex Human Revolution Directors Cut on the WiiU yesterday and played through the first mission. Some quick bullet points:

  • The Game Pad having your area map is actually really nice, because it frees up space on your TV and makes it bigger, allowing you to not have to squint at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Also, with the larger map, some of the perks that were pretty useless before will become more viable (specifically a further out zoom on the map and cones of vision).
  • The game actually looks a little better than the 360 version did, but not as good as the PC version (as it normal). Framerate has been consistently around 30 in game, so that's good.
  • Getting the sensitivity set in a way that makes sense seemed harder than it should've been. It felt almost like there is some kind of acceleration when aiming, which I really don't like. I was able to get it set comfortable after a while, but seemed odd that it took so long.
  • Having inventory management and all your options and such that previously were in a pause screen on the Game Pad does speed things up and shortens your time spent in menus, but I find it odd there's no option to keep the game running while doing that. It instead pauses everything which is disappointing, because I loved how you could keep moving while managing your inventory in Wind Waker HD.
  • Hacking on the touch screen is so much faster and more efficient than even using the mouse is. Also, it allows you to look at the main screen and keep an eye on things, ala ZombieU.
  • When you zoom in with a scoped weapon, the targeting reticule moves down to the Game Pad. This caught me off guard at first, but was fine afterwards. I wish it used the gyroscope at that point, but I'm guessing the reason it doesn't is connected with the analog acceleration I mentioned above.
  • Off-screen play looks and plays great. No complaints at all about that. The idea that I'm playing a game like Deus Ex HR on a handheld screen is just kind of awesome.

Those are some quick thoughts. More as I play it!

I've put Enchanted Arms on one of my many back burners (I have like 20 so others game on back burner) to get back to GTA 5...

I want to get a 100% on this game, I want to do everything this game has to offer, but first I have to make a ton of cash to buy all the property's..

For me to this I'm having to study the Stock Market and see how I can money quick with it.

Well, I finished Legacy of Darkness, and started looking online at different HD texture packs that can be applied to different N64 roms. Unfortunately, nearly all of the games that there seems to be texture packs for are games I've either already finished or don't intend to play anytime soon. My remaining N64 games that I want to play through to get them off my backlog are...

Bomberman 64: The Second Attack

Donkey Kong 64  (I started this one, but never finished. LOTS of backtracking)

Quest 64

I don't suppose anybody knows of any texture packs for these games, do you? I'd like to try at least one of these with upgraded textures. It looks like fun.

You'll likely have issues getting DK64 to run depending on what emulator you use.

Well, like I said before, the controls weren't a problem since I was using an emulator and PC controller. However, when I was re-binding the keys, I had a walkthrough open that described what buttons did what, and I can see why a lot of people disliked the controls. I mean, you had to completely let go of the controller handle that lets you reach the movement controls in order to reach the camera control or werewolf transformation.

Cornell was pretty fun to play as, although it would have been nice to be able to actually turn off the werewolf form instead of being forced to lose all your Red Jewels. Henry's scenario was very clever in how it unlocked all the different things depending on how many kids you rescued, and the slight reload time for his revolver was very cleverly paced out, so that I couldn't just spam bullets in a close-range fight, but it wasn't so long that it was an inconvenience when trying to take down a large number of long-range enemies. "Belmont" (I can never remember how to spell his real name) was rather difficult because of how the whip worked, and made me wish they had ripped off "Z-Targeting" for at least that character, but once I got a hold of some Level 3 Holy Water, it wasn't too bad. (Speaking of which, the Holy Water is insanely overpowered) By the time I got to Carrie's scenario, I was just starting to get burned out on replaying the same levels over and over again, but the catharsis of being able to effortlessly tear through all the shit that had been giving me a hard time as "Belmont" helped carry me through.

The levels themselves were actually pretty well designed. I didn't like the invisible pathway on the ghost ship level, having only known about it ahead of time from some semi-ancient Nintendo Power magazines I read constantly as a kid, even when I didn't own the games they talked about, mainly because it showed that these were going to be a thing, and that since that was the only one I knew about, I'm certain I missed out on some secrets. Also, I hated having to chase down Malus in the hedge maze as Carrie and "Belmont", only because it was so bloody easy to lose him and die trying to re-find him. The settings for the levels themselves were pretty neat, although they felt very empty and barren from the lack of enemies. I would have liked to see some more monsters than the occasional Skeleton and Fleaman. The Clock Tower was my absolute favorite level, though. I liked the Wind Waker-style sidling platforms, and it makes me want to see a Zelda game with an actual jumping and platforming mechanic. The lack of enemies really forced the level design itself to step up and pick up the slack, and it succeeded for the most part.

I don't know if the later 3D Castlevania games are anything like this one, but if they are, I really am looking forward to getting to them on my Castlevania marathon. This game was very good, and I kind of wish that it had been a bit longer. I like 3D platforming games when they're designed around getting to the end of the level instead of meandering every square inch of an area until you're absolutely sick of it and never want to see it again, and this game did a really good job. Considering many of the levels all take place in a single location, being Dracula's Castle, they all felt very unique and kept things fresh as you went.

The only thing I really didn't like was Cornell's final boss. Dracula Ultimate can go suck it, that boss was beyond horrible. In comparison, the other final Boss, True Dracula, was pretty easy, especially for Carrie, who just circle-strafed it to death. "Belmont" had to throw a crap-ton of Holy Water to whittle it down, then go in and whip like crazy, choking down Roast Beef and Chicken to keep his health up. Cornell's boss strategy boiled down to "Get hit, use item, hit boss once, repeat."

Out of curiosity, have you tried playing the game with the HD texture pack for emulators? From what I've seen, it looks very amazing. This game deserves (another) remake, I'd love to see it expanded on and given a graphical bump.

Bought Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies today and played through the first case, which was pretty intense. Heck, it had a save point midway through, I don't think any first case did that in the past. Anyway, hopefully this'll hold up with the other games in the series, and I can't wait to see how the story progresses.
