3rd party support still probably won't jump on this

It's like you didn't read the list of developers pledging support in the press release or see the Skyrim and NBA footage in the trailer. :blah:

Since that post, my friend who shares similar opinion as me showed me a list of developers who are on board with Nintendo for this console and we both actually surprised. Looks like this console may get more 3rd party support than I thought. Lets hope though it's better than the N64 and Gamecube's level of 3rd party support. Nintendo needs to make a huge reversal from what they had with the Wii and Wii U.

It seems all the rumors were true.

It seems interesting, at least. My biggest concern is that it's a successor to both Wii U and 3DS, but backwards compatible with neither. I'm gonna miss the dual screen handheld setup too. But eh, at least Nintendo's realized they can't keep making underpowered consoles and trying to compete with Sony and Microsoft. I just worry that they're gonna lose the third party devs who like 3DS cuz it's not very powerful (ergo cheap), and fail to gain any that like the other consoles cuz they're more powerful. Guess we'll have to see.

Also I wanna drop this here for fun. Shoelace released a video yesterday:

It was a gag video about how some of us felt waiting so long for an official reveal. I just find it how hilarious it was timed, since, as we all know, later that day Nintendo announced that the reveal would in fact be tomorrow. :P

I don't necessarily think this spells the end for the 3DS. It might only have a year or two of 'steam' left, but I don't see Nintendo completely discontinuing their most successful handheld line, unless they can move some serious units early with the NX, erm, Switch.

A couple small additional details. No word on whether or not it has a touchscreen.

I'm sure not every developer on that list will end up putting something meaningful on the system. That always happens. These lists can and will be a bit padded, and not everyone with a dev kit will end up shipping anything of consequence. But even so, the list is relatively large (remember the anemic Wii U third party support list? And that was before the system launched and bombed and support fell off a cliff), and includes developers who wouldn't consider touching Wii U. A few more thoughts on game support:

- As far as I know, 3DS's low power has become a liability in recent years for smaller developers, not an asset. I believe the original 3DS struggles even running Unity games. If an indie can put even a very poorly optimized game on Switch and have it run fine, that's a good thing for them. Budget scaling with power and therefore asset creation doesn't really matter for indie games as much when people are accepting of games that have the style of an Atari 2600 release. "AAA" games can't really get away with looking any less than top-of-the-line.

- It should inherit at least some (most?) of 3DS's support. Stuff like Monster Hunter will be there, of course. It might get Vita's support. Wii U's indie scene on the eShop will definitely continue on Switch.

- If Switch can run modern engines (the new Skyrim remaster is apparently on it, so things are looking positive on that front I guess?) and hardware and software sales don't bomb, it should get some ports of the big budget releases, even if they have to be scaled down a bit further.

- And, of course, it will be the first Nintendo console since the NES to have their full first party support dedicated to it (the occasional mobile release aside). This alone means a large, quality library.

You know, I was sort of confused why they were insisting on supporting 3DS through 2017 and on. Having seen Switch now, this is making a lot more sense: Switch looks expensive,  at least by Nintendo standards. At the lowest, its price will probably be mid-range. Not a bad idea to keep 3DS around, targeting the low-end with its $80 2DS entry point. Eventually, cost of producing Switch will fall, and they can let 3DS go then.

I'm thinking the Switch will cost around $300. It would not be a good idea to price it more than that especially when you have the PS4 Pro, a more powerful system, priced at $400.

I've heard rumors of a base console being about $300 while some kind of bundle would be $400. No details on what that might be, though. You mentioned it earlier but I too am interested in hearing about internal storage space. There were rumors about 32GB... which is the only real negative of the system if true. As I'd said before, that just won't cut it in this day and age, cartridges or no.

So let me get this straight- the Switch is like a refined version of the Wii U and 3DS combined? Sounds cool, but if it doesn't have backwards compatibility that's going to be sad.

For those of you who are calling this a Wii U / 3ds successor. I'd like to be the first to say I disagree.

It appears they are abandoning the touch screen which makes it a big departure from NIntendo's previous hardware. They also seemed to have abandoned motion controls.

There's also a point to make clear there is no sign that this console will be used as a form of dual screen as the actual screen you take out with you seems to exist only for that purpose. It seems to me that Nintendo has no intentions of the Switch to act like the Wii U in any way.

Some people may like these departures, other people may not, but the bottom line is clear that this console's MAIN focus is play in / take out and has abandoned all of their previous gameplay gimmicks.

With this said, I would not call this a successor to the Wii U and 3ds but more so just a console you can take on the go.

I'd also like to note that rumor of abandoning discs must certainly be true because I cannot see discs as a sensible choice for this kind of console as I feel it's going to be very mobile. So I would certainly like to bet that Nintendo is going back to cartridges, which seems to me to be a no brainer considering that compact discs are a dying medium.

And one other thing! NO GLOSSY FINISH! Thank you Nintendo! Glossy hardware can go home!

I just hope what we saw is what's sold. Remember the Wii was presented as a black console, but for the longest time only white was produced.

Also, I want to know about the Virtual Console support. How much storage does it have, are they gonna charge us $5 for each game we own to become "NS compatible"?  I'm really ticked the VC games we bought on Wii can't be played on 3DS unless we repurchase them.

Totally calling this system the NS, not the Switch.

It certainly would line up with Kimishima's comments of it not being their successor, at least in that sense. It'll succeed them in the sense that it'll become their main console, but with a different gameplay style. It still seems odd to me though if it wouldn't have a touchscreen or Wiimote support, at least for legacy reasons. Wii especially. That's their most successful system... ever. Leaving it in the past would seem odd.

"introducing the Wii Mini"

Also the trailer literally showed cartridges being inserted just under a minute in, dude. :P

I find it hard to believe that it won't have any touch support. But maybe a departure from the Wii U/ 3DS is important if they intend on keeping one (3DS) around till the price drops on the NX, dammit, I mean Switch. :P

It'll always be the NX to me for a while, not unlike the Wii being called the "Revolution" during its pre-reveal. But I like Cukeman's NS too. That works.

I feel like no one here has realized how excited people are to play Skyrim...

...on the crapper.  I'd actually totally be down if some Nintendo content was thrown in there too- Master Sword, Hylian Shield, stuff like that.  Ganondorf armor please.  Fire Emblem stuff would fit right in too.

No but really, this looks like a great idea.  The trailer did a great job showing off everything it can do and had a lot of diversity to what it offers, embracing the idea that Nintendo is for everyone.  And my prediction for first party launch titles, apart from Breath of the Wild, is Mario Kart and Splatoon 2.  Immediately jump on that thing being a multiplayer machine.

Of course, what I was lusting after the most were those really nice apartments those people were living in.  Jesus.
