I am really, REALLY digging the 20 year old Red and Blue (the double meaning to that was probably intentional), but I'm not really feeling Cynthia or Wally. I get that Cynthia is pretty much everyone else's favorite champion (for me it's a tie between Lance and Iris) but I honestly don't know why Wally is there. I certainly hope they add more old trainers, and I'd personally like to see characters like Zinnia, Eusine, Looker, and probably some other one's I'm just not thinking of right now.

I actually really like the Team Skull grunt theme, it's far better than the Team Plasma grunt theme to me. Then again, i really don't like 90% of Gen 5 music, it's easily my least favourite OST in the series.

 

 

And the last stage of the fire starter is Fire/Dark and not Fire/Fighting. Okay, you redeemed a little to me. I still hate you for being bipedal. 

 

Rowlett's final stage is Grass/Ghost. Didn't see that coming (seriously, i didn't).

 

 

It says they are trying to create a league in Alola. Does this mean no E4 and Champion? Please let it be true, i'm so sick of E4 and Champion. And you can battle and team up with characters from older generations in the Battle Tree. That's cool.

Team Flare had an awesome battle theme, whatever your opinion of the team itself.

 

But I'm glad they came out and revealed the final starters. Decidueye's typing is, as said above, unexpected, but not unwelcome. Incineroar's... Well I'm glad it's not Fire/Fighting but it certainly doesn't match. Still a very meh design.

 

And Red and Blue are back? That's interesting. Wonder if they're the final bosses again, or some side bonus boss or something.

I believe Cynthia and Lance are the most referenced champions in both the games and anime so it isn't entirely surprising to have her there. (I don't even remember who the Gen 5 and 6 champions even were atm.) Lance is probably there considering the obsession with Kanto or they passed on him for Red and Blue since Lance isn't a champion until Gen 2.

 

The only thing that bugs me a little is that the game doesn't look like it has a big world from what I've seen. The trials look like they could be pretty disappointing too but who knows right now..

Eviolite might work based on the stat spread, or do an okay enough job at the very least (I don't really play competitively anyway, so, eh).  I really don't like Incineroar's design.  Torracat is ferocious in the same way that Simba is ferocious in the first half of the Lion King- it's too cute.  I'll probably use Torracat and glare angrily at anyone using the other gorgeous final evolved starters.  I feel like they clearly put all their best work into Rowlet's and Popplio's final evolutions and gave Litten the shaft, which admittedly kills some of my enthusiasm.

 

Also I would not be surprised in the least if the JoJo references are intentional.  It's really, REALLY popular in Japan, after all.

Yeah, i really like Decidueye and Primarina designs. I was really looking forward to the final stage of the fire starter, i expected like a panther or a tiger, some awesome quadrupedal feline. Instead we get another bulky bipedal fire starter. Even putting my bias and expectations aside, i find the design pretty underwhelming.

 

Now that i read the details on Decidueye, the Ghost typing makes a little more sense since it likes to attack its opponents from the shadows.

I made a venn diagram in paint just now.  A quick and shoddy job but gets the damn point across.

 

Another concern I have is that, well, there's been no other appealing fire types so far.  I don't care much for the salamander bandit thing and dear god the design of that fire/dragon one is beyond fugly.  If there was a cool/cute fire type apart from Litten/Torracat this gen, I might be more inclined to go with Robin Hoot instead.

I think it's compensation for the fact that all the best Pokemon in the first generation were Fire-types.
