It's not even close to asking something like that.  To begin with, the discs didn't even come until Gen 3, and only served to have some sort of background instead of just a blank screen (GB/GBC).  With fully 3D battle environments as shown here, they're absolutely unnecessary and look out of place.  Like someone got in their tractor and starting doing a bunch of donuts or something.

So you prefer a bland green field huh?

No one said it had to be plain; they could easily get rid of the discs and make the entire field detailed like that.  It baffles me why they don't.  It'd look a lot better than it does now.

Aren't Game Freak the developers though? :P

It's still a Nintendo IP, though, provided I'm not tripping. Game Freak does a lot, but I doubt they have the authority to make any drastic changes to the formula.

They pulled it off well enough in Colosseum and XD, so yeah.

If the execution in X and Y were any good as those two games then I would agree with this.

Hmm... I think they do have that authority if they want to.  Obviously Nintendo could veto that, but I doubt they would unless the ideas just seemed bad.

I don't mind the discs personally, though.  It's obvious that they kept it in for either tradition or stylistic reasons (it helps emphasize the Pokemon - sort of like putting a spotlight on them).  I don't think the game would suffer either with or without the discs.

I do agree that it would be nice if Nintendo really shook up the series, though.  I'd love to see Pokemon abilities used for more puzzles (and maybe give Pokemon a HM move slot that can't be used in battle to prevent the necessity of HM slaves).  But at this point, I don't see them really doing anything with the formula until Pokemon starts losing sales... and I doubt that'll happen any time soon.

Full art for trainers in battle?  This is actually pretty awesome, I'll admit.

Thus far, I haven't seen anything I really dislike about X and Y. A few things I'm skeptical about, but I'm not rushing to any judgements until the game comes out. Then again, I'm weird, I'm the only person I know who thinks Gen 5 was worlds better than Gen 3, and I'd argue that, in my opinion, they even edge out the Gen 1 and 2 games. So, maybe the games'll be terrible and I'll like them anyways, or maybe they'll be amazing and I'll hate them. What I can say is that I'm really frigging annoyed with how they're handling the release of information.

This is new.  It's about time we can actually see ourselves throw the damn thing.

EDIT:  Also...

Diagonal Movement.  It's about fucking time.

Here's the new trailer:

So now I have to ask... is the new type even necessary? It seems... contrived. Otherwise, glimpses at new Pokemon, a name for the region (though I'm not sure how to spell that), and some minigame pet sim type thing. Not too impressed with the new information. Actually not really at all. But there's sure to be more tonight at the panel.

"An amazing new world to explore!"  Yeah, right, as if.  It's totally going to be linear as all hell.  If it isn't, I'll eat my hat.

Also they're stepping up the vocabulary.  "The opposing X used Y," instead of "Foe X used Y."

I'm fine with a new type. I'm not fine with making it super effective against dragons. But eh... new type should at least throw a wrench in the old gameplay mechanics everybody's got memorized at this point. I'm a bit baffled that Clefairy isn't a fairy type, but okay... The new minigame thing looks pretty dumb though. Let's just hope it's optional.

...When did they say Clefairy isn't a fairy type? O_o I thought they just showed a few that would be.

Anyway, fairy type seems a bit odd, but I'm fine with it. It'll be nice to have something like that shake up the game a bit.

The whole 3D stuff is really nice, but I am absolutely not sold on the whole patting and feeding stuff. It's these kind of gimmicks that killed every Pokémon game after the 2nd generation for me. That, and the fact that all new Pokémon (including half of the 2nd generations Pokémon, too)look hella crappy.

I think that option (Pokemon-amie) is optional, so that's not something you'd have to worry about if you don't want to. I was gonna ignore it myself, until I realized you could play this mode with a Pichu. :heh:

Horde Encounters...it's about time.  Probably would be the fastest way to grind.
