That's why he's in there:
R.O.B. makes perfect sense...in Nintendo's mind. SSB is not JUST a fighting game, Nintendo also treats it as a celebration of their history. In doing this they grab people from all over their history (think Mr. Game & Watch, that covered a HUGE part of their history.) They want a nostalgic feeling within the game, that is why he's in. I don't agree with the character choice, but it makes sense.
