I haven't started it just yet, since I just got home from 4th of July stuff, and it's 1:30 in the morning, but I just picked up the first Jak and Daxter game from Goodwill for about four bucks. I've never played any of these games before, and remember hearing a lot of good stuff about it. Isn't this one of the first 3D platformer games that moved away from being a mindless collect-a-thon, or am I mis-remembering it with something else? Either way, there was a really long period of time where I didn't play any of the new platformer games that came out, with these being one of them, so it'll be nice to play through. I'm kind of wondering, though. Just how long is this game?
Yes and no. The first game is still a collect-a-thon of sorts, but it does it very differently than, say, Mario 64. You've got this big open world, and because of the plot, you're trying to get to the north. But there are obstacles. For example, to get past the Fire Canyon near the beginning of the game, you need 20 power cells to power the heat shield on the zoomer so you can cross it safely. The power cells are all hidden throughout the world, so rather than follow an Enter stage->Do task->Get Item formula, it's more like Explore Big Cool World->Find Item. As for length, it depends. You need 72 power cells to get to the final area of the game, which shouldn't take too long. You need 100 of the 101 to view the secret ending (which hints at the second game), which can take a bit longer. It's all a matter of if you know where to find them. So... I guess I'd compare the first time length to about a typical 3D Mario game, although replaying it, the length goes down a lot.
However, if you move on to the second and third game, they play a lot differently. Still 3D platformers, but much darker, with eco guns and vehicles and linear story progression that doesn't focus at all on collecting items.
