I know it's beating a dead horse at this point, but I really don't enjoy the NSMB series as much as I want to. It's just that all of the games in the series feel like the same game. It's like Nintendo just takes the exact same game and mods it instead of making a new one. Sort of like how if you've played Super Mario World to the point where you're tired of it, playing most hacks of the game isn't going to change your mind. They'll be something that kills time, but not something that makes you stop afterwards and say "Wow, that was a blast! Man, I can't wait to see if they're going to make another one! I wonder what they can do to top that!".
Newer is a bit better in that regard. They modded it so that they can create and destroy ANYTHING when a switch is pressed, so it's an honest surprise on what's going to happen when you press a switch. It's still NSMB Wii, but it's still somewhat different enough that it's enjoyable. (The fact that it's fan-made so you go into it with lower expectations than if it was professionally done helps a little bit, I guess)
By the way, if you think that NSMB Wii is really hard, once you finish it, go get a hold of DKC Returns. That game's fun, but hard as hell. I beat NSMB in about a week or so, but I never got around to beating this one. Just be warned, the rolling physics are slightly different (Good god, Sonic fan moment. I feel like I'm complaining about one of those!), so you might need to get used to them if you grew up on the Super NES games. A line of enemies that you would think a single roll would carry you through will end up with the last one hitting you.
