So the spiritual factor returns, and I couldn't be happier. It was the one thing Book One was missing, and feels right at home. It's a whole new plot without feeling too similar to the original series, though also it could be too soon to tell for that. It was good that they moved away from Republic City to the South, and even one of the Air Temples. It's also good to see more of Korra's and Tenzin's families. This conflict between Korra's father and the chief of the Northern Water Tribe, Korra's uncle, could lead places as well. There was some great backstory moments, and the main trio feels far stronger character-wise than they did in Book One. Hope that trend continues. Also, with this whole spirit purification thing going on, I'm starting to think waterbending is just becoming massively overpowered. I mean, what special techniques does airbending and earthbending have that equate to this? Firebending has lightning generation, which kinda matches up I guess, but still. It's an interesting device though and not one that came out of nowhere; waterbending always had "healing" properties after all.
Either way, it was a great start and I'm looking forward to seeing where it's going.
Could have done without the whole "No Dad, you're leaving" cliche. It's kind of a bland plot point and almost seems like they're forcing this "rift" between Korra and her father a bit too much. The whole "rift" almost seems out of the blue too, before we never had any real reason to think there was any tension between them, and all of the sudden she's home and she's fighting with her father. I feel like she's really not being fair to him, and I don't know whether that's meant to be a character flaw or just forceful writing. Ah well, one complaint among many glorious things in this premiere. Well, two complaints: It would have been nice if they'd at least touched on how the city recovered post-Amon, instead of just giving Amon one mention in the entire episode, but ah well.
