I agree with Schwa. First thing I do is create my landscapes, then I'll come back and add detail here and there. In some cases though, I'll do things one screen at a time. For example, if you have ideas for detail, you may not remember them later. So putting those ideas to use on the spot can benefit you. That is why in some cases it can hurt you, but more often then not, you should be fine doing the landscapes first.

That excuse doesn't cut it.

A ) Write notes down for yourself so you don't forget, or

B ) Wait it out anyway, come back to it, realize you just thought of something even better now that more of your game is done to give you a better frame of reference.

It's like, take your pick. You win either way. icon_slycool.gif

EDIT: No matter what argument you can make about this, I'm positive I can counter it. I'd even bet my coffee on it. Details-aspects are NEVER absolute.

I think I can put it simply: when working with 2D graphics, too much detail is very bad and will end up making your gameworld look overcrowded. On the other hand, too little detail is just as bad, so you want to find a nice balance between the two. Where the line is drawn is of course up to everyone to form their own opinion on, but yeah.

I posted this in chat the other day, and I wanted more critique on it. Those of you who have played/watched videos of/are vaguely familiar with Skyward Sword may recognize this area, although it is a rather loose interpretation of that area. It's heavily influenced by Dawnlight's old style, which he used on SoD.

Wow, Moo. That came out so perfect! The palette fits so perfectly (Reminds me of Skyloft), and the details are superb. Wonderful job.

Looks amazing, but how do you get in the dungeon in the North-East?

Actually, it's four screens!

And I know you're not good with English, so...

When you use "this", you use the singular, which is screen.
When you use "these", you use the plural, which is screens. (Without the ', because that means you own it icon_wink.gif)

...Never a wrong time for an English lesson! icon_deformed.gif

Great screens youv'e done here, Definatley reminds me of SS. The only thing I think you could do is add Link and enemies in to make it feel alive (Protip: Have Link visible on only one screen).

Edit:

I think he's going to say "THAT'S CLASSIFIED!" on that one. He probably won't want to spoil how to get into the temple to us, now.

I think it was taken in ZQuest and edited. That's why it's only the screens icon_smile.gif

The map of a town I'm making. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated (there is two tile errors near the top where the mountain cuts off abruptly).

Nice, Twinblake! I really like it! Reminds me of GB games (Duhhh xD)

But, maybe you should have a spot where you can only get to later on? Like, a bombable crack? (Besides the one in the top-right)

If the upper level is walkable (i.e. Link can enter the screen from the right) then I'd suggest extending the plateau out into the centre of the screen a little more, because at the moment the whole middle of your screen is dead space that players would rarely - if ever - traverse. Extending it out a bit will make the player feel less cramped when they enter from the right.

Twinblake, those mountains are really odd icon_unsettled.gif Where they transition to different heights (to the left of GAME and around the bomb crack) isn't blended, and at the top the mountains are right next to the fences...
