The good thing about that is it forces people to stay in style; people often like to mix graphics that obviously don't mix, like putting GBC or SNES/GBA graphics in the Classic Tileset, which are clearly out of style compared to everything else and too detailed.

The bad thing about that is that it forces people to give up what they're used to happening with changing colors.  As much as I can appreciate that so we have less clashing floating around, they'd probably rather use a tileset that's more portable and open, rather than something that has a very specific use.

I don't understand, you can still add style clash in this tileset; the palette is not going to stop it.

It won't prevent it, but it'll make it more difficult, which would discourage it.  It's the same as any security system ever against hackers.  You can't stop them, but you can slow them down.

Yeah I don't think it's cool to compare people who clash styles with criminals....

While DDP's palettes are unconventional, they do not in any way impede the ability to make nice screens with varied colours.  Although I recommend reordering them for the sake of familiarity (which, as I take it, is largely the point of this tileset), I have had no trouble whatever with using DDP's CSet structure.  It is not as big a deal as some would make it out to be.

I'm not sure what you mean. Isn't the three color gradient structure used by Koten one of the easiest for ripping and recoloring tiles into? If anything, he made it easier for horrible criminal style clashers like myself since even the overworld tiles in Koten are grouped in threes.

Because all hackers are criminals, of course.

Anyway I say do with it what you will; if re-arranging everything is going to create more of a hassle than is worth it, just leave it as is.  It's not something that makes the set unusable, it just makes it less portable.

Lest you forget there are paid hackers whose job is to test the limits of security.  Google it.  Let's hear what Dragon has to say about his plan for the palettes.

Yeah, I never said all hackers are criminals, but anyone that uses a computer without permission, even if they just stumble upon some insecure network, is breaking the law.

It's analogous to a house.

I've picked up the latest beta, and started poking around in it and I all I can say is amazing. Its so simple to use. And it imports into a classic quest with no problems other then some palette issues, But thats nothing to big, just have to Color Set Fix the screens and then I'll go back over them and spruce them up.

I've decided to use this tile set for a quest I'm working on (since march), I've already got the game 70% completed so there's not much left to do other then some random stuff.

Edit: I won't be releasing the game anytime soon, but It'll be released in Q4 of the year. So it should give time for the tileset to be worked on some more ;)

Edit#2 Here is what I've done with it so far ;P

I fully agree! ...Except with the whole metaphor thing. Preventing clashing was something I had in idea from the get-go of making Koten. I even purposely set up my Csets in nice 3-color ramps to show the graphics artist exactly what 3-color sprite palettes are available for them. Classic's default Cset setup is OK, but it's a little odd how the 5th and 6th colors of each palette are barely ever used.

Ohhh...that thing. What's up with you and your fixation with that poop tile?!? It's like, one tile out of 100+ pages! I'm pretty sure it was some sort of generic poorly-shaded rock in Classic, but since I already had a couple of rocks I decided to convert it to something completely different in the spur of the moment. And I can see that was a good choice, considering how much I've seen you use that tile. XD

Wow...very nice usage of Koten! It's nothing that impressive considering it's just a Classic conversion, but it's nice to see that everything has converted somewhat easily. I've also seen your stuff in the Screenshot Critique thread and that's all really nice! Now all we need is the first full Koten quest and that'll really make my day! :D Oh, and I can understand your troubles with the palettes. But my newest update for Koten might have something interesting for you...

================================================

So, a few days ago I planned to finish and release Koten, but I hit a roadblock. I ran into this video, discovered online NES/SNES 2-player, and have been obsessively playing through the classics with my buddies. Hee hee.  :naughty:

So since Koten is not quite finished yet, I'll be keeping things under-wraps. I've taken into account what everyone's said and I've finally found the perfect palette for Koten. It's a lot simpler and some screens broke down with the new palette, but let's just say it's neither what I wanted or what designers like RetraRoyale wanted. Nevertheless, it's perfect and it took me a whole day to convert all of my items and enemies (not touching a tile). So since I'm feeling particularly spontaneous, I won't be releasing what I've done with the palettes on this thread. But keep an eye on the database. Koten Basic could pop in any day now. ;)

Thanks :) I Know its just a simple conversion, but I'm redoing the overworld to look nicer. This might be the first full quest with Koten, it all depends if everything goes smooth for me. ;)

I'll be looking forward to the next update. :D
