While the SMB3 race was a big success from what I can tell, I think we should probably take a bit of a break from Mario. So in an effort to gauge some interest, I'm going to throw up a quick list of stuff off the top of my head that has come up a few times:

  • Super Metroid
  • Zelda 1 (this would probably be 1st quest)
  • A Link to the Past
  • BS Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets score attack (each week is a little under an hour in length and there are 4 weeks, so how many weeks we do at once would depend on what the participants are feeling)
  • Starfox 64 score attack (I didn't own an N64 growing up, so I have no idea what this would involve)

We'll probably be doing all of these at some point, but for now I'm interested in which one people would want to race next weekend (24th-26th)? We'll probably organize a time to get together and such on Skype afterwards, but for now I just want to figure out what people would want to play.

ALTTP wins my vote for next weekend. Just hope it will be a decent time for me to come on.

I think I will choose Super Metroid, because I have played LTTP more, and I want a challenge.

Zelda 1 and the BS zelda score attack really sound fun. Definitely up for either one (though I would prefer Z1 simply because I can play on console :P)

I'd personally like to do Zelda 1. Though I'll still hop in regardless, ha ha.

So... I know one or two more people on the forums said Zelda 1, but a few more people in the race chat have expressed interest in Super Metroid and have been practicing and/or gearing up for it. So it's probably going to be Super Metroid this weekend. Zelda 1 will probably happen next weekend since I don't want to put that off anymore.

We just have to figure out a time. I'm tentatively thinking Saturday, but I don't have any idea beyond that. I'll update you all when I have a better idea on that. :)

Since I want in for this... timezones are gonna be a real problem. Turns out having one Brit getting involved in this causes time confusion :P

Any time Saturday after somewhere around 6-7pm GMT is fine for me.

I would say we should race BS Zelda, but we'd all win around the same time since the rom is pretty much meant to be complete in literally 4 hours.

I think with the original BS Zelda (the one the BS tileset is based from), one of the romhacks that combines all the weeks into one week ("Third Quest") advances time based on the triforce count and other progress indicators. So there shouldn't be a problem with a straight up race there.

But for Ancient Stone Tablets, this is the reason I suggested doing a score attack. Since it actually gives you a score at the end of each week (provided you are not impatiently pressing buttons and accidentally skip it, which is annoyingly easy to do), it's better suited for that anyway.

Not many people that were interested have been coming forward with when they'd be able to do this and there are some people that can only really do this during the day and some that can probably only really do it at night, so here's what I'm thinking we could do:

At around 2 PM EST Saturday, there's going to be a Super Metroid race since a few people have definitely expressed interest in that time. However, at around 7 PM EST Saturday, there might be another Super Metroid race for the people that couldn't make it during the daytime if we can get enough people together for it.

...

As an aside, do people think announcing a race a full week in advance is too much notice? I ask this because most of the races that we've done had people basically deciding an hour or so before the race or even race crashing during the race with "sure. I'm up for that." It has also been a bit of a pain for me to try to schedule times with everyone several days in advance. Don't get me wrong. I think advance notice is something that's nice to have and I'd still try to do it by at least a full day if it's possible (though I may shoot for 2-3 days). But at the same time, I don't want this to become a huge scheduling hassle basically every time I just want to race something with some people for fun.

I also feel like my way in-advance scheduling makes people forget they can race whenever they want with whatever game they want and they just wait for me to suggest the next game and time instead. :( For example, people have tossed around racing VVVVVV in the Skype chat a few times. But I feel like maybe that hasn't gone anywhere since people are waiting for me to say "we're going to have a VVVVVV race on <insert date and time here>." I really don't mind if you try to organize races in the Skype chat or this thread on your own.

I threw in the VVVVVV idea, but mainly haven't committed to a time because I don't really know what my schedule will be like far in advance. My last weekend and this weekend have been busy finishing up school stuff and seeing a friend visiting for the weekend, and next weekend will be the last before I start my new job, so I'm not sure when I can do it. But if anyone else wants to race, feel free to post a time, and if I can make it, I'll be there. If there's been no race and it looks like I'll have some free time, I'll suggest a time.

Not that I'd be any good at VVVVVV anyway...

The reason people don't want to commit until last minute is because this is a low priority professionally and socially. I'm not going to deny someone dinner for a speed run, for example. It's good to announce these in advance, but don't expect anyone to fully commit sooner-than-later. If nobody shows up, you can always postpone it.
