Figured I'd make a topic. Found a few videos of gameplay from E3:

1-5

2-1

4-2

The new cat ability seems... interesting, I guess, though I hope the wall climbing ability doesn't totally break the game. Okay fine it can break the game, the Tanooki Suit and Cape Mario have done that in the past and no one complained. Doesn't seem like it will anyway; the ability seems limited and, from the levels shown, Nintendo seems to have designed smartly around the ability. I guess what bugs me the most is that it sounds like they say "Nyan nyan" when they activate the item, and honestly I can't stand that word. I blame Nyan Cat... that, and the way the actors say it is annoying too. Maybe they'll change it to some more mild American cat onomatopoeia for the Western crowd... I dunno.

I like how there are some alternate level types so we're not stuck with the same kinds of levels throughout. There's also some actually decent level length, rather than 3D Land's ridiculously short levels. Still kind of disappointed it's not an actual 3D Mario game like 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy, but at least it looks better than 3D Land. I always thought 3D Land was a good start for a new style of gameplay, so maybe 3D World is the rightful successor that will make the gameplay truly enjoyable. We'll see. The bosses look like they'll be neat too, rather than tons of Bowser rehashes. Should be cool.

Oh, and ability to choose from four characters, all with very clear differences like they used to be, is a very welcome return. I might pick this up when I get a Wii U... after the game's price drops. Looks neat, but doesn't seem like a "must-have" game.

I actually liked the gameplay style Super Mario 3D Land presented. It's a great representation of how a 2D and 3D Mario can work together and still become a unique game. At least it's not on the same planet as NSMB2 where it was clearly a cash-in for Nintendo. And I agree that it's a bummer that we did not get a SM64/SS/Galaxy styled Mario game for Wii U.

On the flip side, I'm not so sure about the D-pad controls. Metroid: Other M proved that a D-pad on the Wii Remote does not mix well in a 3D environment. I hope they add CCP and Pro controller support to this game.

Thought they said somewhere that it will support 4 Pro Controllers... but I can't find a source for that right now.

Other M is a bad comparison because the gameplay environments weren't 3D except in FPS mode which disabled movement.

Yes they were. I was referring to moving Samus around in 360 degrees and how it did not mix well with a regular D-pad. I remember my thumb being sore after playing a session of Other M. That game was meant to be played on an analog stick. :-/

Or not at all. >.>

I do like the basis of the 3D Land/World concept, definitely. I just almost feel like it's too soon for a sequel. (lulz NSMB sequels everywhere (though to be fair they've only had one per console since the DS days so it's not all that bad I guess))

Other M wasn't a bad game, it just had really bad writing and didn't meet the insane benchmarks set by Super Metroid/Metroid Prime.

I haven't tried Super Mario 3D Land yet; this one actually looks a little interesting, though?  Not enough to justify getting a Wii U on its own... but!  Maybe enough to where I'd want to try its prequel.

Also, transparent pipes are honestly a really neat concept that I'm surprised didn't make it into the game before.

Also, Cat Mario.

It's interesting but if 6-3 is any indication, the game looks extremely easy (To cater the hectic mess that 4 players would be?) which is kind of disappointing as I'll likely only be playing it 2 players at most.

Well, remember that Nintendo's recent strategy for Mario games has been to make completing the game not that difficult, but then add extra content that's pretty hard to complete.  Super Mario 3D Land's main worlds weren't that difficult, but then it had the bonus worlds that got really tough at times.  For Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, you could easily complete the story with 80 stars with ease.  However, to get all 120 stars, you had to go through some really difficult stages.  They also probably took easier stages because they didn't want people to get too frustrated with the game at E3 booths.  If people had to replay a lot, then they may not get to see as much of the game as they would have liked.

I mean, it could all be a super easy game.  But I wouldn't use their E3 demo as much of an indication.

Watching the Direct now. For those who missed it or want to check it again, here's the trailer:

And may I say, damn this game looks great. Hopefully it's true to the trailers and is as awesome as it looks. Kinda wish they'd used that glorious main theme again, but that's fine. I just really love that theme. :heh:

That's one of the silliest Mario games I've ever seen.

I MUST HAVE IT.

That looks so awesome. Having 4-way multiplayer makes it a really convincing reason for me to get a Wii U.

That gives the impression of a lot of gameplay variety which is awesome.
