I just got a new computer and I decided to get Timidity++ set up for maximum MIDI potential following the directions in this thread. All went well except for the config file. Timidity claims it can't read the config file that I downloaded. I put it in the /timidity/musix folder and tried copying it into the /timidity folder with no success. What do I need to do?

BTW, this computer is running Windows 7 and I put all of the soundfont files in the /musix folder alongside the config file.

Are you using the entire MIDI-Yoke process or the driver?

If you're using the Driver(because I recently discovered that you can use the driver on all Windows platforms), you have to place the timidity.cfg file in C:\Windows

If you're using MIDIYoke, you can set where the timidity.cfg file is by right-clicking the synth icon in the system tray and selecting preferences, and selecting the config file from in there. Chances are, its not reading the correct file.

I'm using the timw32g.exe player application and the config file location setting is "C:\timidity\Musix\timidity.cfg", where I put it. I tried putting it in C:\Windows and changing the path, but that still didn't work.

I have no idea what the Yoke is - what is it?

Ok, there are 50 thousand things you did wrong here.

1: You're using the PLAYER not the SYNTHESIZER.

2: You don't have a way to route MIDI to the Synthesizer.

3: You don't have the driver to route MIDI to the synthesizer.

4: You can't SELECT the driver to route MIDI to the synthesizer.

5: You didn't read the instructions all the way.

And if you didn't read the instructions all the way:

6: you probably don't have all the soundfonts required

7: they're probably not in the c:/timidity/musix directory

8: so even if you had the config in the right place, MIDI wouldn't make sounds.

So lets go back and start from scratch. BECAUSE you're using Windows 7.

1: You need to get the MIDI Mapper selection control panel object

Get that and see if you can select "Timidity++ Driver"

If you can't let me know and we'll begin the long process that is Last Resort.

1. Okay, so what is the synthesizer?
2. What does that mean?
3. I did install the Timidity driver.
4. I actually did use the control panel item to select the Timidity driver the first time.
5. I read the instructions all the way until the end of the driver setup.
6. I downloaded all of the soundfonts you listed.
7. They are all placed in the Musix diretory.
8. The Midis actually play regardless of the config file, but they just use the default Timidity soundfont.

So... what do I need to do in light of all this?

Alright, ya bet meh.

I don't know why it wouldn't work for you from here. o.0

Oh, I remember now.

When you edit Timidity.cfg(or replace it) close ALL applications currently playing MIDI to get it to restart. If the driver doesn't refresh the new soundset, than you need to restart your computer.

Also, don't use Timidity's MIDI player while using the driver. These don't work well together for some reason.

I restarted the computer and opened a midi in Quicktime and it still sounds the same as the Timidity default. Does your default soundfont sound noticeably different?

Don't use Quicktime. Quicktime uses it's own wavetable for playing MIDIs.

All right then, what player should I use? WMP has an annoying habit of turning off the MIDI volume after playing.

Anything not provided by Apple. try WMP first to even see if there's any difference.

Hey, it works! Thanks for your help.

Edit: Argh! WMP turned off the MIDI volume and I can't find the midi volume control on Windows 7. Never mind.

Zelda Classic can now use the Timidity++ driver for playing MIDIs.
