Lucidity

Description:
As part of my minor in music, I was required to take a few music theory courses. While a lot of the material covered in the classes was stuff I learned over the years, there were plenty of new things covered and I wanted to apply them to a musical piece of my own. I give you Lucidity, a midi written in 19/16 time with chords consisting largely of 7ths and 9ths.

I'll admit my previous works for whatever reason avoided dissonances and suspensions like the plague, despite them not actually sounding bad when properly resolved. This midi fully embraces them. Enjoy.

Additionally, I have a chiptune version of the midi you can listen to here: https://phosphormusi.../track/lucidity

-gorgeous production, the Andalusian cadence is already a very beautiful progression, the variation and harmonic complexity and texture (I love how the harp arpeggios are done) you've given it only enhances that!

-interesting rhythm. The rhythm in the first half feels a bit lopsided since it's actually a 9/8 rhythm in disguise (but I think that was totally intentional on your part to create contrast), but at the halfway point the variation does do the meter full justice.

-it's a fair bit repetitive as the other commentator pointed out, but that's perfectly appropriate for a video game so I don't really see that as a downside - in Zelda I could see this as the theme of a beautiful yet melancholy dungeon.

Great job!

Sounds nice. It's mixed well and overall lays down a good feeling. I have a few of remarks:
  • I think it's a bit repetitive. At first the section with the bells is a nice release of tension, but I don't like the piano melody there if only because it's too similar to previous melodies.
  • Overall the melodies are a bit stiff. I think you are on the right track of something pretty interesting near the end with the flutes, but I would add even more motion to that flute melody just to help it cut through the chords.
  • Too much of the motion in the song is in the arpeggios. If you can dial down the arpeggios in certain points in the song to let a nice melody carry the section instead you can break up the repetitiveness. You partially do this when the arpeggios are switched to the bells halfway in.
Nice work overall, keep it up.
