Could you?

Couldn't you?

Or do you simply not care either way?

Could care less never made any sense to me. It means you care because you could be caring even less, while couldn't care less means you are at zero in caring.

"That was non- non- non- non heinous!!" ~ Bill S Preston, Esq.

That's pretty much what's wrong here.

I think I would probably say something stiff like "I have low enthusiasm", or the generic "I don't care about that", rather than using this confusing phrase.

In that case, you could always elect to rescind the opposite action of declining the reverse inclination to not refer to Mr. Preston.

I couldn't care less about this poll.

But, but... this poll cares about you

Depends on the scenario.

The phrase "Couldn't care less" could be interpreted in two different ways. The first way being you do not care at all and so you are unable to care any less, because you care the least possible. The second being that you care a lot and that you love to care and so you couldn't care less than what you care now.

"Could care less" could also be interpreted in two ways, but the reasons are basically the same as before.

Based on the question you've asked, "How do you (not) do it?", you are asking two different questions. "How do you do it?" and "How do you not do it?". The first question would prove that the answers mean what they read, so if you pick "Could care less", you could care less. The second question suggests that the answers have been reversed. Although, if we are going by what I've said about the answers, then things would get very confusing. Of course, the meaning in your answer depends on how you've interpreted the question, and how you've interpreted the phrase. So, by picking an option, two different people could think you've chosen something completely different as they see the structure as something different.

Say one person reads the "not" and another does not. If they choose the same answer, both opinions would be different, but valid. If one person interprets "Could care less" as the literal meaning and the other does not, then they have answered differently, but with the same answer. The same thing would apply with "Couldn't care less". Based on all of these factors, although the topic shows two answers, there are in fact eight different answers, but that answer would be hidden by the dual meaning of both the question and the given answers.

This topic is very confusing.

I can't summarize my feelings on this matter, so instead I'll use an image.

I'd say I couldn't care less, but I voted in the poll and posted here so I guess I do care at least a little. But the thought of saying that I could care less is just... dirty.

I couldn't care less feels more friendly while I could care less feels more hostile.

Either way, couldn't care less makes more sense to me.

I like how this completely random and utterly trivial topic brought out one of Joel's most contemplative and insightful posts.

He really does care

Caring less is good. But you'll also find that people who loudly proclaim they don't care tend to be the ones who care the most! :D
