(See Mani Kanina's answer for the solution) It's a "you see it or you don't" thing, some saw it quickly, but it seems many didn't. An extra hint was added in the update to make up for that.

The numbers are on the statues from top to bottom, but they are also mirrored, focus on only looking at the right half of a single statue.

There's something strange happening in these lost stray woods. Make sure the north direction is really where you think it is. You've probably found something that will help with that.

If you mean the compass, yes, I've found it. But is there a map hidden somewhere then? I thought it would point north only if you had a minimap shown...

You don't get a minimap, but the compass still always points north.

Okay, I think that's enough for today. I'm enjoying it so far! I'm at 6:27 playtime, finished the monastery and went to Syzor's grave. However, I think I hit a roadblock. Who am I supposed to give the ribbon to? And lastly, where is this supposed mushroom that I need to get to cure Link's illness? Are these two related?
