I am just wondering. What defines it as a fruit? What is it that would make them decide that?

Veggies have seeds inside too, not just fruits.

If it doesn't taste like a fruit, its probably a vegetable. Just because it develops the same as a fruit should not mean its a fruit, If it's used as a Vegetable in cooking because it is not sweet it has a mute taste.

Fruits are sweet.

"Vegetable" is a culinary term; it's meaningless in botany. "Fruit" is used in both fields, but with different meanings. In botany, a fruit is formed from the ovary of a flowering plant. It doesn't matter what it looks or tastes like.

Vegetables can be any part of a plant. Tomatoes are fruits, lettuce is leaves, parsnips are roots, asparagus is a stem, peas are seeds. Vegetables are classified by how they taste and how they're used, not what they are. Though honestly, it's somewhat arbitrary; really, a vegetable is just whatever we call a vegetable.

Tomatoes aren't good fruit. They're good vegetables. :P

Urhm, no: https://en.oxforddic...or-a-vegetable/

Likewise, chili, and bell peppers are also fruit, by definition.

I'm certainly on the side who aren't a fan of raw tomato.

Sweetness doesn't really mean it's fruit. Some fruits/vegetables just have less sugar, or have more acidity than others.

It appears that my avocado tree hates me. I have been growing it for 5 years now and I don't have any fruit.

Speaking of, avocados are one of the best fruits.

Is it a male Avocado tree? :P ...jk

If you grew it from seed it can take 5-10 years (maybe sooner or later depending on variety), but if you bought it at a nursery (usually grafted IIRC) you can get some in 3 at the earliest. Also self-pollination on a single tree is a little tricky, again, depending on variety, but if it flowers you can set the pollen yourself if you can figure out the order it releases pollen. Uhh... I'm a bit hazy on the specifics, so you might want to just look it up if you know what kind of tree it is.

Also beans are fruit. :D

Man, I can't believe how many people don't like tomatoes...!? I'd really like to know where you guys are getting your tomatoes, seriously.

Aye. The quaifier, in general, is that a fruit contains the seeds from which the pant produces excluding nuts, because they have no pulp of any kind. Rhubarb however, is a vegetable.

Leaf, root, or stem, is vegetable.

The texture kills them for me. Again, sauces and soups, fine, but I've never been a fan otherwise.

The potato is the only nightshade plant that I regularly ingest without major alteration (cooking techniques), although I smoke enough tobacco leaf to consider that my primary nightshade consumption. Given my joint infammation, none of that genus is good for me, at all, at all; but I love it all too much.

Not so keen on eggpant, and obviously, I woud ony use true nightshade berries in a very carefully prepared tincture, should I decide to make any again. It's dangerous to prepare it.

Tomato is the square root of ketchup and other tomato based sauces.

Does that also make it fruit paste?

It's not bad on toast. :)
