Hi devs

Situation

Currently, when pressing "W" or "View > Show Walkability", most combos turn pink when they are unwalkable.

There are already different colours/patterns for unwalkable hookshot and ladder combos. And for walkable water combos as well.

Request

Would it be possible to have a different colour for unwalkable water combos when debugging the walkability?

Why

It would be helpful for me when layering other combos over water combos. Right now I sometimes make the mistake of putting a water combo under an unwalkable combo, f.e. a rock that is in the water. The result is that Link can swim through that rock. If the walkabilty debug feature could show me which combos have the water type, it would be very useful and could prevent me from making these kind of mistakes.

I understand it's a luxury feature. And there are workarounds. Such as changing the tile of the water you put under unwalkable stuff for a quick moment to check whether things are OK.

Still it would be very helpful to me (at least) and perhaps to some others as well.

Kind regards,
Sven

Well, here's the thing: walkable and unwalkable water don't really.... work together. You should only use one or the other through the entire quest.

The thing is, solid water doesn't act SOLID; if you are swimming in walkable water, you can swim right into unwalkable water like it's the same. Because water sucks ass.

So, in the example you have there, it doesn't matter if the water under the unwalkable combo is solid or non-solid, you can swim through it either way, because it's water. That's why water has the blue color for walkability.

My understanding is that they could work together in the same quest if you used them in a specific way. You might want some water that you can drown in without the flippers and some that you can't. Now, I can't think of a specific case where you would want that, but I have no doubt that it'll come up at some point.

I don't see why this has turned into a discussion about walkable water  :heh:

I'm not planning on using walkable water in my quest.

I actually want the prevent this:
So, in the example you have there, it doesn't matter if the water under the unwalkable combo is solid or non-solid, you can swim through it either way, because it's water.

F.e. I layer all kinds of mountain and rock combos over water, simply because it's easier than spriting all of it (my water tiles have 8 frames  :slycool: )

And if the unwalkable water would get a different debug colour, that would help me prevent Link from swimming through mountains.

Perhaps purple would be suitable as it is a mix between blue and red? :-)

Unwalkable water shows as blue in debug mode. It just does.

If you have multiple things layered over each other, the topmost layer takes priority. This is some ancient code that attempting to fuck with I cannot see going well.

Are we talking about the same debug mode? As unwalkable water shows up red for me when pressing W (View > Show Walkability).

Actually to be able to see it in a blue colour would work just fine for me.

Which is the debug mode you are referring to? I would gladly use it!

"If you have multiple things layered over each other, the topmost layer takes priority."

Ah this is no problem for me by toggling the layers, so no need at all to mess with that legacy code spaghetti ;-)

Thank you for your help so far

Edit:
Also just now discovered that you can show the combo types by pressing Q. (I always wondered what those numbers are) This would actually be sufficient as well!

So I guess you can regard this request as fulfilled?

Still I'd like to know which debug mode you are referring to Venrob, as this might be helpful for me as well.

I was referring to the W mode... I could swear both walkable and solid water showed as blue?

Looks like walkability overrides combo type in this case.

Other combo types have the walkability itself change colors, such as hookshot-only combos turning gray instead of pink when solid, but with water it seems that the blue coloring is applied at a lower level than the solidity coloring.

Request filled (left, new; right, old):

This is in both 2.53.1 and in 2.55. Let's hope that it does not confuse users. This wlll be in the next set of public builds, along with the upgrade to Allegro 4.4.4.

No, if the drowning rule is off, it did not show water as solid, prior to this commit.
