I've been using Avast Free Edition for quite a few years now, and it's been rather annoying me these last few months, in particular being somewhat slow to start up and slow to scan even one small file, along with a silent mode that alternates on certain notifications (recently, it's started 'switching off' notifications on file scan results when not explicitly opened - even though previously it had been showing them with no issues even on silent mode - forcing me to open the damn thing every time I want to scan something, bringing me back to the 'slow to start up' complaint). And since then, I've also heard about privacy issues with the company and that it's been 'falling behind' a little as a brand.

I've looked into a few other options, but as always, for every good thing, there seems to be a bunch of bad as well. Does anyone here have any suggestions for other anti-virus software to try out, or at least look into?

I've been using Sophos Home for some years now.

Recently they've had popup ads for a sale on buying Pro.

I'm not fully up to date on anti virus software suits, but if you're on windows... Then Microsoft Security Essentials should probably be all that you need, it should generally perform around the same as conventional anti virus software suits. If you're on windows 10 then you already have it, if you're on earlier version of the operating system then it's a free download via microsoft's website.

If you're on mac or linux then I'd recommend looking into any open source anti virus software suit, though I'd imagine most populare Linux based distros have one included in the common applications in the file installer/package manager.

Buy a air-gapped computer.

Or, alternatively, only compute in the woods.
